How old was your LO when you took them to the dentist for the first time? What was their experience like?

I'm so confused! Everything I read in parenting magazines and books says to take your child by the time they turn ONE. However, our pediatrician says she recommends around 3 years old, and my own personal dentist doesn't see children until 4! I guess we don't have the best dental insurance, because to see a pediatric dentist who's considered a "specialist" it would cost us over $100.

I was thinking that by taking her to the dentist now at 13 months it would get her used to going and having someone look in her mouth. However, the receptionist at my dental office said one is way too young and would just traumatize her for future dental visits. Not sure what to think now!! Any advice?

DS was 1.  He went for a "happy visit" where they just looked in his mouth and showed him the dental tools.  His first cleaning was at 2.  We switched dentists shortly after.

DD was 6 months.  That's when the dentist wanted to start seeing her and we were there for my son anyways.  He just looked in her mouth and made sure everything was going well.  When she fell and injured her mouth at 20 months I was very happy to have that relationship already established with the dentist.  I was able to call the emergency dental line and get a same day appointment with a dentist we already trusted.

For that very reason any future children will start at 6 months as well.

I don't take mine until they are about 3-4. Our dentist doesn't want to see them before that unless there is a problem.

I took my dd at 20 months.  Honestly, I'd say it depends on how many teeth your child has.  My dd didn't get her first teeth until she was almost a year so there was no need to take her at a year, kwim?  But some kids have a mouth full of teeth by 6 months in which case you would need to start taking them to a dentist a bit earlier.  Definitely take them to a dentist by 2 or 2 1/2 years old.

I tired at 3, but my dad told my son that the dentist would pull out all of his teeth.  That didn't turn out very well and I was very upset with my dad for upseting my son.  We tried again at four and he was much better.  He is five and just had another appointment and loves going to the dentist.

I waited until 3 with both of my girls and they both did wonderfully.  (and no cavities or problems.)
