Does using tampons mess up a young girl's virginity?

My niece Leila is 14 years old and ever since her mom (my brother's wife) passed away, I've been there for her and I have loved her like my own child. She got her first period when she was 13 and she recently asked me if she could use tampons instead of pads because she wants to join the school swimteam next year.

I've heard rumours that if you use tampons, you aren't a virgin anymore. My mom told me that when I was Leila's age and I obeyed her. I didn't use tampons until college, a couple months after I lost my virginity.

Of course, times have changed since then, but I still have my doubts.

What do you guys think? Does using tampons mess up a young girl's virginity?

i think you've been told enough abou how tampons have nothing to do with virginity. anyway.....i couldnt wear a tampon until after i had had sex, it hurt way to much to even get the tampon in properly. Go over with your niece how to insert and use a tampon and let her know it might be too uncomfortable for her to wear at this point in her life.

Most girls lose their hymen doing daily activities. Use of tampons has nothing to do with virginity, penetration of the vagina is when i think you stop being a virgin.

Everyone has said plenty of times how unless she's had sex, she is a virgin. The tampon might tear her hymen but it may already be torn because of other activities. If she wants to switch, make sure you get her "junior" ones and that she understands how careful you have to be with tampons. Let the girl wear them so she can swim.

In my oppinion the hymen isn't what makes you a virgin. Heck, even some girls are born without it. Being a virgin means you have not engaged in intercourse.

Virgins are people who have not had sex. If you insert a tampon, you are not having sex with it. So yes, you can still be a virgin and use tampons.

The idea comes from the fact that young women needed to be "intact" (their hymens intact, that is) to be considered a virgin. But that was only because an intact hymen was needed as proof in order for the girl to be married. This is obviously a very old, even ancient, notion. It's so strange that it has survived in the modern era, but it's not the first time I've heard it.

I HAD my hyman on my wedding night, as evidenced by the blood and pain when we had sex that first time, I had used tampons and even Instead cups for years.

Very popular belief in the South. I actually have cousins who have called me crying because their parents told them this.

oh my you poor thing I can't believe you were taught this the only thing that makes you not a virgin is a penis going in the vagina not a tampon. I'm still appalled that you were taught such a stupid thing it's sad.

Tampon use does not interfere with her status as a virgin. Let her use them for swim or anytime.

Tampons are fine and have nothing to do with losing your virginity. The only way to lose one's virginity is to have sex.
