Hi - i'm new and have joined because I need some objective advice.  A friend told me that I was looking more and more like my mother.  Does she mean to be insuting? She knows my mother is 30 years older than me. I am trying to assess whether she is a frenemy.

1 mom liked this

I hear that ALL the time!  And quite frankly, the older I get the MORE I look like my mom...but I think my mom is pretty...although when I step out of the shower in the morning and see myself in the mirror, I go "YIKES! Mom get out!"

"Frenemies" tend to be passive aggressive, never leaving you feeling quite warm or fuzzy. They like to throw insults behind smiles. Trust your instinct. If you have to ask, usually you're right.

maybe they have nothing else interesting to come up with, try saying oh but I'm not anything like my mother and chuckle. Or, you could try the same for your friend and just say ah yes I am I love my mother and touche you also look like yours. Or something pretty bad examples by me but you get the gist.

We would need other info on past exchanges to help you decide if this person is passively/agressively insulting you. Do you have any other exchanges between you that could shed light on this? My personal motto with these types of people is to not let them get into my head. I think i am awesome and so do most other people so I tend to marginalize negative people. It has the side benefit of driving them nuts. Good luck sweetie!

no- take is as a compliment. She is not talking age- but features.

No I don't think she meant it as an insult. Family friends tell me how much I look like my mother all the time, as much as I hate it I can't deny it, because it's true. With that being said, I'm sure your mother is a beautiful lady and you may just favor her in one way or another so don't take it as an insult.

I always thank people when they tell me I look like my mom. We really don't look all that much alike, but I believe my mom to be a strong woman and have always wanted to be like her. So I consider it a compliment.

She just means you and your mother share some features, it isn't an insult, and she isn't saying that you look as old as your mother.

If you always leave her company with bad feelings about yourself, I think she is not a good friend for you.  Regardless of her intentions, you should spend time with people who make you feel good!

No, not unless your mother is really ugly.
