i was sent home a permission slip to sign for my son to go to ASU for a day of touring the school and collage prep and hands on activity (part of the macro program ) apparently his school is the only school invited from our county my dilemma is this my son is 10 in the 6th grade the school is taking 5th and 6th graders only they are promoting this as a get ready for collage trip. My son has ADHD, mood disorder, and autistic tendencies i called the school and was told its 15/1 ratio the kids live at 5 am wont be back till 7 pm its almost a 5 hr drive on a buss.
My mother says no way hes to young
friends say hell no he will go nuts on the buss
i feel 1 yes he is young but not too young 2 yes he can barley handle a 1 hr drive at times and 3 why do 5th and 6th graders need to go check out collages shouldn't they be heading to JR high school to learn those campuses ? i think it is a lil much
what woudl you do woudl you let you son go
Edit to fix grade its 5th and 6th graders
And to add this is his first yr in public school since kinder from 1st till Oct last yr he was in AZVA a distant learning situation onlineschool
Edit 2: thank you all fro the actual advice and kind words and ideas really thank you i mean that i decided not to let him go my gut says its to much to soon my moms gut says no as well shes got a bad feeling about it and i see the votes here so far are a no as well you know we try so hard as moms to do the right thing for our kids give them all we can and do right by them and some times we just need to know by others not family that they would feel same way
I would ask him if he wants to go, after telling him it's a 5 hour drive.
I would look into a portable dvd player for him if he likes movies. That would alleviate some of the travel time if he takes a movie or three to go with. Ones that he likes, of course.
No, I didn't read the responses.
they are not allowed to take electronics except cell phones :( i thought of that as well he got dvd player 4 yrs ago for road trip to grandpas i even thought of his kindle since he loves reading was told no
i did ask him again if he wanted to go explained how long the drive was on a bus and the look he gave me was definitely no and he said mom the kids drive me nuts on the way home from school and they want me on a bus for 5 hrs with that havoc lol this time the no was definitely his and not due to hearing me and my mother talk about not being comfortable with it

*nodding* It sounds as though he really doesn't want to go.

Okay. I didn't think it would be a yes, since he can't take anything with him but a phone.
I feel bad about that though. I would have thought that he would be allowed what he needs to be able to handle that long of a drive.
He'll be missing out. Maybe he can go in a year or two.
I think they are doing this to get everyone psyched to go to college early so that they choose classes based on college since high school grades and attendance are what is looked at when applying for college.

apparently his school was invited by them they didnt sign up to go "they were formally invited the only school in our county to be invited" it has to do with this Macro program thing a packet of math problem that they do weekly
trip will include a hands on time with science and engineering then a tour of the campus and a few classes for lectures not sure how much will actually be done seeing they leave the school at 5 get there approx.10 am am and head back at 1:30 to get back at the school 6:3 7 pm so they will only be there for 4 -4.5 hrs and will be taking a lunch brake so if they get there eat 10 i figure about 10-20 min getting 2 6th grade classes 2 5th grade class about 30 kids each class so approx 120 kids off the buses lined up gathered etc.. so 30 min for lunch give or take 20 min to off load and re load buses that's almost an hr so they will only be on campus learning looking etc... for 3.5 -4 hrs approx i think 10 hr ride for them is to much for 3 hrs of action

I agree with you on that.
Not worth the time to get there.
Would it be an option for you to take him there yourself and have him meet up with his classmates for the 'action' part of it, and then take him home when it's done?
Don't mind that last part... it was just an idea that popped in my head.
