Do you find yourself feeding your LO some of the same foods over and over again throughout the day? Or for the same meal every day? For breakfast my 13 month old has half a whole-grain waffle, some cut up fruit, and some oatmeal. Every day! She doesn't seem to mind, but I don't know what else to give her! Unfortunately eggs are out b/c she has a sensitivity to them right now. I also like to give her fruit with most meals, and as a snack in the afternoon. But it's hard to keep so many fruits in the house at one time, so sometimes I feel like she's eating bananas and grapes all day long! I run out of ideas for healthy snacks that don't involve dairy (trying not to overdo the dairy since she drinks whole milk, and sometimes gets constipated).
Thoughts?
You can do cereals with almond or coconut milk. That is one of my daughter's favorite things.
She doesn't eat dairy or meat.
These are her breakfast options, maybe that can help you.
Sprouted grains toast with jelly
Fruit and almond yogurt
oatmeal
granola bars, we like McCabes Granola bars because they are made locally.
Some days we will just have broccoli and carrots with hummus for breakfast because that is what she wants.
Potatoes are a good breakfast food as well. Diced up and steamed, great for little ones :)
Steamed and mashed broccoli (my son used to love that as a baby)
Steamed peas, carrots, squash
Fruit loops (with no milk)
Wholewheat bagel with honey (cut up into bite sizes)
Chopped nuts (if shes not allergic)
Slices of deli turkey cut into bite sizes
whole wheat muffins
Crackers with peanut butter (he still loves this - for your kid, make sure the crackers are broken up into smaller bits so she doesnt choke)
Buy oranges they stay good for a long time
My LO loves oatmeal, and doesn't seem to like most other breakfast foods, so he gets that a lot, with fruit and milk. I switch it up with yogurt, cottage cheese, or sausage and biscuits every now and then, but oatmeal is the only thing he'll eat every bite of. For other meals it's easier to mix it up. I found these "spinich cakes" in the freezer section at Whole Foods, and both of my kids ( the older one is VERY picky) love them. They can dip them in yogurt ranch, or sour cream, or sprinkle them with parmesan cheese. The brand (Dr. Praeger's) also makes broccoli cakes and swett potato cakes. Each one has the vegetable as the first ingeredient, so it's not just potato cakes with a little bit of the vegetable. Neither of my kids would touch a plate of spinich, or even broccoli, but they love these cakes. You can also look online for recipes to make your own.
No.
My kids eat whatever we do. I get a lot of my meal ideas on Pinterest, lately.
I do have regular meals that the kids love, such as potato leek soup for dinner - or french toast for breakfast- but they are all old enough to request them, it's not like I'm stuck in a rut.
Mine all love salads (though one dislikes cucumbers and another dislikes tomatoes) and stir fry especially with shrimp. And of course, everyone likes spaghetti (even the one who dislikes raw tomatoes). They also like grilled salmon and other fish (walleye and tilapia and various panfish). And they all enjoy tacos now as well.
We try to have something different once in a while but I know I get in a rut sometimes making the same things.
You can give her oatmeal (made with water) with raisins, a little maple syrup and apples.
A healthy snack would be celery sticks or maybe sweet potato chips. My kids love pineapple and watermelon.
Also, you could try giving her some mixed berries sprinkled with a little sugar (no more than a tablespoon)
My kids love nutella on whole wheat bread, but since Nutella isn't very healthy, I try not to give it to them more than once a week.
