I know this is an off the wall topic but I have been dealing with some pretty bad hypothyroid symptoms this past year. I went to my Dr who ran some bloodwork and told me it wasn't my thyroid because my TSH was in the normal range. One of my first cousins contacted me when she seen a status I put on facebook talking about my symptoms and not knowing what it could be and she told me to have them check my thyroid antibodies because she had been going through the same problems and she ended up having Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I called my DR and sure enough my antibodies were high. He told me that it didn't need to be treated yet because it wasn't affecting my TSH or T4. This didn't make sense to me but I let it go.
Fast forward 7 months.. my symptoms are getting worse. We've been TTC for the past year and it hasn't happened. It didn't help that my cycles stopped right around the time all my symptoms started. I started trying to chart my fertility and taking my basal temps when I woke up. I did this for three weeks but stopped because my temps were so low and erratic I couldn't make sense of them. It was pretty much always below 96.5. I found out that low basal temps are a sign of a low functioning thyroid and started taking a multivitamin & eating thyroid healthy foods. No results. I went on the web and did a bunch of research on Hashimoto's and found out that it is recommended to treat with a low dose synthroid despite blood work being in the high/normal range and that it could slow or even stop the progession of the disease! I contacted my DR and relayed everything to him about my BBT and asked to be put on a synthroid. He relented and finally gave me a referal for an endocrinologist who I'll see in the middle of September and prescribed a low dose synthroid today. I'm extremely excited about starting. I've had symptoms of a thyroid problem that weren't as bad as they are now for as long as I can remember. The worst of it being exhaustion, weight issues, depression and anxiety.
I took my first dose of synthroid today. I can't really find too much good information on the process of begining synthroids and what to expect. How long does it take to feel better? What did you notice and when? Stories and advice would be amazing! Thank you in advance Mama's :)
