Meet Tim Burke, Biathlon!

  • HEIGHT 5' 10"
  • WEIGHT 161LBS

  • BIRTHPLACE UNITED STATES

Tim Burke represents the best hope the U.S. has to win its first Olympic medal in biathlon, the only sport at the Winter Games that has never had an American medalist. He recently solidified his status as the top contender from the States by winning a silver medal at 2013 World Championships, where he became the first U.S. biathlete to reach the podium at Worlds since 1987.

Career highlights

  • 2013: World Cup Standings – 10th

  • 2004: World Championships – 18th (relay), 61st (individual), 71st(sprint)

Things to know:

1. During the season leading up to the Vancouver Games, Burke held the top spot in the overall World Cup standings, the first U.S. biathlete ever to do so. He failed, however, to live up to the hype and his best finish at the 2010 Olympics was 18th place in the mass start. Burke boosted his profile in the sport with a second-place finish in the 20km individual at 2013 World Championships.

2. While mild-mannered in personality, Burke likes his cuisine plenty spicy. He never leaves home without a bottle of hot sauce, especially during the World Cup season. His top two hot sauces are Cholula (sweet) and Sriracha (spicy) When traveling to World Cup events in Russia during the winter of 2013, team had a “huge bottle of Sriracha” along.

3. Burke has been dating German biathlete Andrea Henkel since 2008. Henkel was a double Olympic champion in the 15km individual and the relay at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games and reached the podium in the relay two more times, winning silver at the 2006 Torino Games and bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She also won a silver medal in the 15km individual event at the 2013 World Championships, one day before Burke won his in the 20km individual event.

What is Biathlon you ask?

Biathlon is any sporting event made up of two disciplines. However, biathlon usually refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting

I think biathlon is an interesting sport, though it's not always that fun to watch on tv... It's a good one to check in on, like the marathon. I'm sure we'll watch at least a little of it if they air it on prime time.
