Personal

Aaron Pike’s Paralympic career began not in Nordic skiing, but in wheelchair track & field at the University of Illinois-Champaign. Pike raced with the Fighting Illini alongside Paralympic phenomenon Tatyana McFadden, who will also be making her Nordic skiing debut in Sochi. Pike suffered a spinal cord injury as a teenager, but he didn’t let that slow him down for long. In 2009, he raced to a fourth-place finish at the Los Angeles Marathon in the wheelchair division and a 10th-place finish at the Boston Marathon, followed by a third-place at the 2010 Twin Cities Marathon. Pike represented Team USA at both the 2011 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships and the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Pike made the switch to winter sports after the London Games, when he was invited to a training camp by one of the U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing National Team coaches. He was nominated to the U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing National Team in May 2013, and in his debut season he earned three top-15 finishes in world cup competition. When he’s not on the slopes or the track, Pike enjoys camping, fishing and spending time with his family, whom he cites as his biggest source of strength.
