huge opportunity or too young? UPDATED

My 11 year old son has the opportunity to go to a 5 day summer camp for academically gifted children, because of his high ISAT scores. This camp is for students who score above the 90th percentile in both math and language arts. It is open to kids entering 6th- 8th grades (9th-12th go on a different week). Graduate students will act as counselors, and the kids will be taught by University Professors.
My problem is, they will be staying on campus in the dorms for the 5 days and 4 nights. The University is an hour away. He has never been away from home for that length of time, and never for more than one night without a parent or grandparent.
He really wants to go, and we have enough in savings to afford the tuition. I'm worried. My husband thinks we should let him spread his wings a little.
Would you let him go and take advantage of this great opportunity? Or would you hold off a couple of years and hope he gets the chance again?

Thank you for the advice, Ladies. I have decided to let him go.
For those who were asking, the program is called "Challenge to Excellence"

I would let him go in a heartbeat. IT will be a great experience for him. This kind of opportunity may never come up again ...

It's hard to judge without knowing him.    If the odds are good that he'll get another chance I think it would be better if he wasn't at the lower end of the age range.    But otherwise I'd probably let him go.
