Does my son need special shoes for running?

Pardon my ignorance on the subject ladies. He's the only one of my 3 interested in anything.

He is 8. He wants to join Cross Country. Do I need to spend the extra money on a name brand, or will his generic brand be just fine? (We normally shop Payless/Walmart/Target brand)

Talk to the coach and get advise.

At that age, I'm not sure. Running shoes are not created equal. If he does really enjoy running, I'd suggest taking him to get properly fitted for shoes specific to his running style. I know that if I'm not in my good running shoes, my knees hurt and I get shin splints.

Ideally you should take him to a sports specialist who will check his gait and fit him with a pair of running shoes that are correct for him, these can be costly. I would talk with other members of the cross country.

Running is a sport and can effect your feet and legs if not wearing the right support, meaning the sneaker.  I used to run regularly as a teenager and felt very comfortable running in my runner sneakers.  Look in sales or large shoe departments for them.  The price is lower and more affordable.

I used my converse most of the time... I have horrible back problems now. I wonder why. Lol

Go to Big 5 or somewhere similar. You can get pretty good running shoes for a decent price, expecially for kids. I had a pair of $30 Nikes that lasted me 5 years and worked perfectly.

Since running gives the spine, knees, ankles, a lot of pounding, it is probably worthwhile to get good shoes.

My dh is a cross-country runner and the only time he will splurge on apparel for himself is when he needs new running shoes. If your son takes up running as a sport I would definitely advise getting him running shoes with proper support and that fit correctly. It is definitely better for the feet, knees, and spine. It only takes a couple times of running in his regular shoes before my dh is noticing pains. Think of it as the same as buying a Baseball mit and cleets for baseball. It's sports gear for runners. :-)

Get running shoes..they don't have to be expensive but comfortable ones he only uses for running.

Sneakers designed for running are a must but you don't need to break your bank account on super expensive name brands either.  Shop sales and check clearance sections to get good ones at a reasonable price.

My daughter ran track and cross country and her coach always recommended specific shoes for running. Take DS into a shoe store and get him fitted properly..there are shoe stores out there for runners. It's a neat process..
