I know someone is going through a divorce and needs to know how child support works. He brings home about $2200 to $2400. They have 2 kids that will live with the mother. How much child support will he has to pay and how it's calculated?

It depends on the state. It can be up to 33% of his income.

Tell him to go to his states website for guidelines.

It does depend on the state or province (for Canadians).  Most use tables, but those can be adjusted for various reasons.  Best thing to do is to go on the website for your area that provides that information.  A lawyer might explain that over the phone during a free consultation.

Thank you everyone. I forgot to mention that they live in California. I went on the website and got a rough number. They are not getting a lawyer. They will do it themselves.

Where I lived in Nevada it was 25 percent for two children and that was for gross pay. :)
