Grocery Cashier Duties - Should they be doing this?

This happened a few months ago and it bothers me. They were training a new cashier and a list of cashier duties were laying on the counter.

Clean the restrooms.

Should cashiers handling our food be cleaning toilets?

I would think that they wash their hands after they use the restroom.  But how germy are they after cleaning the restroom?

If the point of sales is the most important position in the store, why have the cashiers cleaning the restrooms?

I have never held a job description that did not have the phrase "and other duties as assigned"

Personally, I think your concern is over the top. Most food handled by a cashier is wrapped or packaged.

Also of note is the fact that for many stores being a cashier is the lowest position given to new employees

Food is packaged and it's not like they're rubbing it all over their bodies.

I cleaned many, many toilets when I worked at McDonalds as a cashier and I handled the food.  I did wash my hands though.

Hopefully they wash their hands often.  I do know that most of the time a cashier has other responsibilities as well.

I hate to tell you this, waitresses clean bathrooms as side work.

Here is a gross FYI for you. The floor scrubbers that ALL big box stores use are filthy and spray a fine mist of germy, soapy, sometimes smelly water on the floor and up 2 feet into the air near them. That yuck desends and lands on everything. It is a joke that people munching on the unwashed, and most times unpaid for grapes, don't know how filthy the fruit really is. The bathrooms and register belts are probably some of the cleanest areas that are not involved in food preparation in the store.
