It is the first death from swine flu reported outside Mexico, the country hardest hit by the influenza outbreak. The official gave no other details on the case.
Meanwhile, probable swine flu is being reported in Illinois.
State public health officials said Wednesday that more than one case is being sent to federal authorities for confirmation.
"Probable" means the Illinois Department of Public Health has conducted tests on patient specimens showing swine flu is probable.
An IDPH spokeswoman says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make the final determination on whether Illinois' cases matches the swine flu outbreak in Mexico. She says the cases are located at a North Side Chicago school.
A Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman confirms that the school is being closed
.
The CDC said Tuesday that there were 64 confirmed cases in five states. That doesn't include Illinois.
Germany also confirmed three cases of swine flu on Wednesday, becoming the third European country hit by the disease that has upended life in Mexico. New Zealand's swine flu total rose to 14 and the World Health Organization called for an immediate scientific review of the disease.
Germany's national disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, said the three cases include a 22-year-old woman hospitalized in Hamburg; a man in his late 30s being treated at a hospital in Regensburg, north of Munich, and a 37-year-old woman from another southern town. All three had recently returned from Mexico.
Britain and Spain already have confirmed cases of the disease.
In Geneva, the U.N. health body was holding an emergency "scientific review" of the swine flu outbreak Wednesday to collect what is known about how the disease spreads, how it affects human health and how it can be treated.
Experts will take part via telephone from the United States, Mexico and other countries where people have been infected. A report will be published shortly after the meeting ends
I would love to know where at in Texas. I am only 45 minutes from San Antonio where the first cases in Texas were discovered, and we are all sick. I don't have insurance but the kids do and when I took them to the Dr yesterday he wouldn't do the test for it. He said if by the end of the week if they still have fever to bring them back. I got so sick I ended up with pneumonia Grrrrrrr.
I think we should start taking this seriously. I am already washing hands and not going into to many public places. I think when this gets to be about our children it is better to be safe than sorry. We really dont know what the outcome will be so until then I am going to wait it out and stay home! Anybody else thinking this way?
Although there are no reported cases in WV yet, I'm still thinking about taking my son out of school!! I don't know who has traveled out of town and who has brought it in!!
To contain the outbreak, Texas officials closed 14 schools near San Antonio and one in Dallas. In North Texas, Dallas health officials are tracking three more "probable" swine flu infections that could be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in coming days.
Elsewhere in Texas, local officials said they were tracking four possible cases in Nueces County near Corpus Christi
In Schertz, Texas, two high school students have recovered and the third is recovering under voluntary isolation at his home, officials said
In the middle class suburb outside San Antonio where the three confirmed swine flu cases live, residents did not show any alarm
this is what i came up with for the areas in texas that it has swine flu. hope that helps
Yeah, this is definitly SCARY! I have a 21 month old who lovess the out doors, and so do I; but I am taking precautions and staying home. He is sick but has been sick since before the Swine flu came about, he only has a runny nose and cough. I was paranoid about that too, but they said he's fine. I was watching the news, and a Mexican lady was blaming US Americans for bringing it to THEIR country! Oh give me a break; lol. Well, all you ladies, keep safe and your children safe, this is a very scary thing going around. I pray there are no more deaths. Poor lil 23 months old =/
