I was informed earlier this week that I have gestational diabetes. *scream* im sooo scared. so i have the little needle thing with the machine to test mysef. and i hate all of this. im so scared that they will give me a cesarean. im so scared they will take the baby out of me early. i just want to scream!!! dh has been so good & undrestanding, but i feel like he is downplaying this whole thing. he thinks im getting all worked up over the cesarean. has anyone else had this? what were your outcomes? im sooo worried about the baby, and my other baby i just had a year ago. if i get a cesarean, how am i going to heal, and care for my 1 year old & a new born?.... advise please??
Thanks for the info on the artificial sweetners... i never would have known that. i used to work with a guy that had diabetes, and he used those all the time. he is another reason why im so scared. he had it bad. wow, only 5 lbs... thats good, ive gained way too much to even talk about it ;) both pregnancies.

Hun take a DEEP breath. Its nothing to get so worked up over. I had GD while pregnant with DD. Its fine. Yes you have to test your blood sugar , and thats not even bad. A tiny pin prick. I thought it was going to hurt, it doesn't. You just have to watch what you eat. Not hard at all. It does take some getting used to but ...... you learn. I only gained 5 lbs my whole pregnancy cause it made me eat better. You wont automatically need a Csection ..... so take a breather on that. They wont induce you early unless the baby starts to measure big. I was induced at 39 weeks, 1 week to be exact from my due date, and DD was born 7 lbs 9 oz. So really, deep breaths, its going to be fine. Oh and stay away from the artificial sweeteners, they can affect your BS lvls even when ppl say its fine to use.
I should add too my c-sections were due to other reasons not the diabetes. My aunt had a vaginal birth with the gdiabetes, and my friend is pregnant right now with gdiabetes and they aren't talking c-section either.
Usually you have the BIG huge babies when you have full blown diabetes before pregnancy, you don't control it during pregnancy, or you never knew during pregnancy. You'd have to have a 10-12lb baby before they feel it's to big to deliver vaginally and that is RARE.

Thanks ladies.... its all very reassuring. i have a feeling this baby is smaller than baby #1 (she was 8lb 10oz) but you never know. to the PP, im so sorry you had it so tough. i have read alot on this & thats why im so scared. i kinda feel like you do, im not in denial yet, but im mad. i dont know why, but im mad that i got it. i was fine with baby #1. so i cant understand how i got it with baby #2. but, you know the other PP was right. my mom had it with my brother. he was 10 lbs 2 oz. but she didnt have it with me ( i was first, brother was second born) Its also very reassuring that not every one has a cesarean. maybe i can do this without one. but if i have one, i pray everything will be ok. like other PP said, "mind over matter". i say that too ;)
I had it too =( It completely sucked and the whole time they were telling me my baby was gonna be huge, so they were gonna induce me about a week before my due date. Well my water broke a week before my induction date and he was only 7lbs even =) My HUGE baby, was tiny lol. I kinda gave up towards the end... I didn't have to do the insulin or anything and my baby was fine when he was born.
My dr told me the main reason I got Gestational Diabetes was because I am only 5ft tall... so gaining 25lbs during my pregnancy put me over weight, which cause me to have diabetes. You'll be fine as long as you eat healthy.

Oh.. and try not to compare gestational diabetes to the other types it's not the same... it's nowhere near that bad.

My second was a cesarean and my daughter was 22 months old. Don't worry, you will be fine. The healing is very similar to a vaginal delivery - and most hospitals require that c-section patients stay a few days longer in order to heal more in their care. I had a water birth planned for my son, and I was extremely disappointed at the time... but the fact of the matter is, it was better that he was born than not. Most OB's perform a free mini-tuck with a cesarean, anyways ;)
First, don't worry about it! My sister is a nurse/midwife and certified diabetes educator; she spends her days speaking with women like you. You need to watch your diet, as you have been instructed by a nutritionist or CDE, and check and record your blood sugars. It is ok to be afraid, just don't let the fear stop you from taking care of yourself and your baby.
I had it too. There is a history of it in my family so that is probably why for me. I hadn't gained a lot of weight and am a really healthy person - I jogged up until I was 5 months along and worked out all the way through. Anyhow, it did keep me from succumbing to all of the holiday sweets, haha. I was really scared at first but once I understood how food affects your blood sugar and what limits I should follow it was much easier. I was able to control it with diet. I really watched what I ate, stayed on the diet and everything was fine. My son was born naturally at 6 lbs 7 ozs with absolutely no complications.
I had gestational diabetes with my 2nd pregnancy, but I only had to test 2xs a day & towards the end every other day, my sugar levels never went high! I made sure I ate right & no junk food! I ate lots of salad & veggies! I felt like a rabbit for a while! LOL! But I had to do what was best for my baby! I had no complications from it! My little boy was born at 38 weeks weighing 6.11Lbs & 19 1/2"! If you have any questions about it, pm me I have been through it! I might be able to help you out! (oh the only time my sugar went high-but not so high- was when I ate cheese ravoli!)
LOL..Sorry dont mean to laugh but i had gd also for my 2nd pregnany and i had a panic attack when i found out..luckily i didnt need insulin and just need to be on the strict diet...dont get me wrong i did cheat and have chocolate bt it made me sick to my stomach but i am a chocolate feen..lol...i was so scared but once i talked to the girls on here and did some research i was good ..and luckily i did do research cuz i couldnt get an appt with a nutrtionist for like 2 weeks...good luck hun..eat rigt..you can also have diet soda...i drand alot of flavored water and sprit zreo...i didnt have a c-cection but i did have him 5 weeks early...ohh and you can get it if it runs in ya fam or if your overweight...and make sure you eat well after the baby also cuz gd will go awat as soon as the baby is out but you have a higher cjhance of getting type2 diabetes later in life if you dont take care of yourself
