I hear people say all the time that they had back labor, but what does that mean?

I am curious because I never had back labor and this is my third child.  3 am this morning I woke up with sharp lower back pain (like right above my butt-crack and between my hipbones).  I've tried taking a bath, hubby rubbing my back, sitting, walking, laying on different sides and the backache won't go away.  I'm also getting really sweaty.  I have a prenantal appt early tomorrow morning I just wanted to ask you ladies until I can talk to the doc tomorrow'. p.s. I'm 38 weeks preggo

Has anyone had back labor? What does it feel like?  How long was it until you had the baby after the backache started?

  • back labor is worse than regular labor from what i hear...i had back labor and my cousin had regular labor with her first and back with her second and she def. says back is worse..

what it is....it's like when you give birth the muscles in your belly contract and you feel your BELLY tighten, it's reversed..your back muscles are the ones that are doing that, and it HURTS so bad! i would have prefered to have the regular kind bc i was laying down the whole time and it was so hard to get situated..

  • Sorry I have no clue.  Call your doctor to let them know what is going on

  • I had back labor with my two vaginal births.  I also had a scheduled cesarian.  For me it felt like pressure against my tail bone.  Lower back pressure.  My hubby would rub and rub as hard as he could push on my tailbone area.  For you, the baby may be just getting into the birthing position.  Good luck and congratulations!

  • I agree with this. It was the worst pain ever. I never knew it was actually the back muscles tensing up, I just thought it felt like that. I can tell you that at least for me sitting as far forward as I could eased up the pain, but the stupid hospital would ONLY let me lay back so I ended up getting pain meds (and eventually a csection).

  • So much more painful then regular labor. 2 of my 3 boys I had back labor, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. I don't know if was just me, but the labor went a lot quicker though:) like 4 hrs of labor and that was it.......

  • I'd think you are having back labor. With my first, all I knew was I woke up during the night, had to pee... then kept having to pee like every 2 seconds, not much came out. I went to go back to bed, and the back pain was too bad to do that, so I went in... and sure enough they said my water broke... more like sprung a leak lol That's the only labor I've had, I expected to feel the contractions, but I didn't so I didn't know I was really in labor. Anyways I got to the hospital roughly 2 hours after waking up and the pains, and I was dialated to 4... she was breach so they had to do c-section.

good luck, sounds like you'll have your little here any time!

  • OH MY GOD it was the worst pain ever.  I had it with my daughter who by the way was breach.  I labored for 7 hours with severe back labor.  It hurts so bad I could not lie still, I squirmed all night until we got up to go to the hospital.

  • That is so my story except we stayed home for 7 hours only to get to the hospital dilated to 6 and discover she was breach and off to a c-section.

  • I had back labor with my son. It hurt so bad. You feel all your contractions in your back unlike in your stomach. Everytime I had a contraction it was in my back. If you are 38wks pregnant you might not  make it to your due date. Have you had any other problems like contractions or anything?
