Just curious if you are, or if the person you know find it's necessary to constantly talk about money, or what you buy, or what you give your children?  I know a couple people who have money or are pretty wealthy and have never had any of them talk about their money or what they do with it, or what they buy.   So I'm just curious, b/c to me, people like that are either missing something else in life or they don't really have what they say they have, or they are using a bunch of credit cards.

My moms landlady is pretty wealthy....(she is in real estate)....but you would never know it...she shops at Goodwill and yard sales....when I was younger she would ask me if i could babysitt her 2 lil girls at her home....and boy this lady really didnt care about her money...it was ALL over the house....wads of $20's on the kitchen counter.....wads of $$ on top the TV in her living room.....her lil girls had their princess toy purses filled with $$....and her jewelery was just tossed wherever she took it off.....and yet her kids would wear clothes from Goodwill !!!

Overall she is a nice lady...never snobby or rubbing her $$$ in our faces....

I know a guy that owns a ton of property in my town. He is a millionaire and he leaves thousands of dollars lying around. Like 50,000 on his coffee table, leaves his house unlocked, and then goes across the street to the neighbors LOL!! He's very cute too and young!!

  • So I just read this post right, talking about carnivals and things of that nature and how this lady likes to spend money and goes overboard. So, every single time I have ever seen her write anything it's about how much money she has or how much she spends on something. I personally think it's sad when people are like this. When someones entire life revolves around money, they miss out on the TRULY important things in life. But the other people that I know that are well off, speak nothing of how much something is or how much they're spending. I guess it's all about class and how you decided to let other people see you.

  • well... i have no money ha.  however, i was raised with money and everything a girl could want.  today i want to punch my parents in the face for some of the traits i got because of that! (just kidding obviously)...mainly the part where i'm horrible at keeping up with my house & doing laundry because i don't have a maid coming on M, W, F anymore...  damn!  ha.

but yes, i agree... it's tacky and classless to talk about how much money you have or how much you spent on something (unless someone asks).  all that says to me is that your trying to prove something.

I'm 24 & a mom to 1 crazy little monkey, Taylor Wrigley (go cubs go!). I haven't taken the easy road but I have taken a very blessed and fun one!  I'm also a full time working mom (i RAISE my son too btw, gasp!) as an interior designer. I live in Oklahoma (BOOMER!) out in the boonies. I love going to the playground, meeting new people, traveling everywhere, a nice ice cold beer, showing our son the world & having fun! My SO is that guy that has never met a stranger, works with his hands everyday, lives in flip flops, jeans, hat and a white tee. He is a wonderful HUBBY and an even better father.  I love my life!

Truely wealthy people do not talk about their money. It's not necessary.

LOL, from the mouth of Paris Hilton, you NEVER say how much something costs OR how much money you have.

Think about it.. If you do discuss it, people think you're bragging, even if you're not and then you always stand the possibility of kidnappings, robbery or a number of other unsavory attempts against one's life.

It's actually foolish to discuss what one has because no one ever knows who's listening or why.

  •  I was friends with a girl, that married into a wealthy family. In fact, I was in her wedding. We are no longer friends. She always would talk about her cleaning lady doing a lousy job and complain about the morons that work at restaurants and how the house they were looking to buy (and did) actually has "wings". Each of her 2 girls have their own wing! ANNOYING!!!

I was the friend that she called daily to complain about how difficult her life is. If she was sad, her hubby ordered flowers, get over it!

Meanwhile, I had the boys that would be trying to pee in the toilet from across the room! Her girls loved to clean! YES, THEY REALLY DID! They had a fit if they had a friend over to play and their playroom was messy! They spent the entire next day putting things back to where they belong! Insane!

When they would buy a new car, they hired a "financial advisor" that specialized in cars! No salesmen for them!

When we found out our son was legally blind, well, her daughter was, too! When our son developed Perthes disease, her other daughter was deathly ill with some mysterious illness! She had to have the attention of everyone! How dare our children be worse off than hers! LOL!

Oh, my, you brought back memories! I'm so glad she's gone!

  • how long were you friends with her? I wouldn't have been able to deal with that.

  • And this is the reason there is a group for Financially Comfortable Mommies..

Let me put it this way, although it's improper to speak about money, because some are in a higher tax bracket, they can't mention what their kids got for Christmas, even thought the rest are doing the same, because the gifts to their kids are so out of touch for other ladies, they get bashed.

Now, it's ok to listen to others cry about not having money or being on welfare but not that someone bought their child a 2009 Corvette. Not always is price mentioned but we can all assume what that car may cost, which is relatively the same thing.

  • We do okay but I go to church with some very wealthy people, one lady owns the biggest house in the neighborhood.( at least 2mil) Anyway No they don't feel the need to share. They are actually very modest about it and I have never felt like I don't fit in even though I know they make a lot more than my Husband does.

My Husband does good for our age and compared to our same age friends makes good money but we wouldn't ever make then feel bad for it either. I think if you have and are able to share then you should. If someone called and said they couldn't pay their electric bill I would help.

We are blessed and are very gratful for it. I think it all depends on how you were rasied and what your belifs are. Having money truly means nothing in the end so although we grateful to have it, it doesn't define our happiness. For some people it does and that is why they feel the need to share.

  • Certain things here are off limits to everyone.  I am not about to tell anyone how much money we have invested or how much my husband makes or the value of my home in exacting numbers.  That is just tacky...to ask or to share.  It's like that unwritten rule that you never ask someone how much they make.

Other things are contextual.  For example, in a forum such as this...if someone asks "What did you spend on Christmas"...I feel as welcome to participate as any other member here.  BUt I won't go shopping and come here and make a post that says "OMG, I just spent ___________  (insert amount)".  There are times it is appropriate and contexts in which it is a simple answer and others times when it is not.

In person, I have found that I am middle of the road.  If someone asks, I will share.  I may share with my closest girlfriends what I spent on things and they also share with me and there is one-upmanship or anythinug involved.  Sometimes we may ask, out of sheer curiosity and nothing more.  I have friends who have a great deal and they run the gamut.  Some are very closed lipped and you would never even suspect they had two dimes to rub together and wear farmer jeans in public.  There are others that are total flaunts.
