Rice cereal

At our 4 month well visit today we got the ok to start rice cereal.  I mix 1/2 tbsp with formula and it's very watery.  My question is when do you start thickening it up for them or don't you?  We were told no fruits or veggies till 6 months old, so we are waiting on that.  Thanks in advance!

Personally, I made it the consistency of baby food, just added little by little of the cereal in until it was good. You don't want it too thick

My girls just turned 4 months old today and we will start solids with them shortly.  With my two year old I got her used to the cereal and then I thickened it up as she got used to the consistancy.  My dr. also recommends no veggies until 6 months and then at 7 months introduce fruits.  This worked out very well with my two year old.  She loves her veggies and fruits.

Thanks so much for the advice!  I wasn't sure what to do and my pedi wasn't too much help on the question!  LOL.

We tried to make it with the tablespoon to 4-5 ounces of cereal as it said on the box and it was way too soupy for my son. We immediately started thickening it to give it a little substance so he actually had something to swallow. Once he proved to us that he could swallow we started making it thicker. We us 2 1/2 oz of formula to 3 tablespoons of cereal.

I know you want to wait until 6 months to start other things, we said that too but we found our son got real sick of the cereal real fast. We gave him rice cereal, oatmeal and barley-all the single grain cereals that they have. We started mixing a teaspoon of apples into the cereal at 4.5 months to give it a little flavor so he would eat it. We gave that a week then started adding bananas to it to. We didn't take away any of the formula and replace it with baby food, just added a little for flavor. So if your 4 month old ever gets sick of it that's something you could try too if you wanted to.

My pediatrician had us start at 4 mths, cereal and progressively start veggies and fruit. My little one eats cereal in the morning and cereal and veggies in the evening. He will start fruit with his cereal this week. He will be 5 mths old this week. Our doctor wants him to be eating cereal, fruit and veggies by his 6 mth check up. He is working on getting the hang of the spoon, but enjoys his feeding times. I make his cereal the consistency of baby food. I think so many people start their babies on food at different times...

We made it runny until she was about 5 months and made it a little thicker. It was completely thick like oatmeal at like 6 months.
