How long were you able to BF? Are you happy with how long you BF?
My son was born 5wks early by emergency c-section due to my high blood pressure, he was in the NICU for a week. He was 4pounds 5ounces. In the NICU they let me BF 1--2x a day then I pumped the rest of his feedings. I was able to pump and feed for 2 months then my milk supply went down to nothing, I was really bummed out, I had really wanted to BF. If I could do it over again I would have stopped pumping and exclusively BF right after we can home from the hospital, BF is great, pumping hurts ouch!
I fed my DS breastmilk for a month - and that one kills me, I wish I would have had the support on pumping to make it past a month. I blame myself a lot for his eczema b/c I think he would've been fine if I could have fed him breastmilk longer.
I BF my DD for 6 weeks and then switched to exclusive-pumping and did that until she refused to drink breastmilk at 5 1/2 months. I tried different batches of the breastmilk, thinking that maybe I had pumped after exercising and that batch didn't taste good but no matter what she wouldn't drink it. I gave her a bottle of formula after 2 hours of trying different batches since my DS was still on formula at the time b/c of a failed elimination diet that made him lose weight. She sucked it down. I tried for a week to get her back on breastmilk and everytime I tried, she wouldn't take it. Even if I mixed it with formula, she wouldn't drink it. I was disappointed b/c I wanted to make it to a year with her, however, I am really proud that I was able to get as far as I did and she doesn't have eczema.

I only breastfed for 2 weeks, unfortunately. I am NOT happy with the way things turned out and now I know better. The hospital pretty much turned my DD into a formula fed baby due to her medical issues, and I had no idea that I could refuse them. She was in and out of the hospital due to jaundice, infections, etc. so instead of me feeding her, they tube fed her formula and gave her a formula bottle. I couldn't afford a pump because my DH had just gotten laid off two months before and I only got to rent one for the first two weeks of her life. So after two weeks, she stopped eating from me , no matter how many times I saw WIC breastfeeding counselors, nurses, lactation consultants, my midwife, etc. Like I said, after the first two weeks, I no longer had access to a pump so she ended up being formula fed.
Next time, I know that I can tell the hospital to back off. No matter how sick she/he is, I WILL BE BREASTFEEDING WITH NO SUPPLEMENTATION AT ALL. I firmly believe in breastfeeding, especially until child self weans.
I had no intentions of BFing until my baby girl was born 8 weeks early and was in the NICU for the first 3 weeks of her life...and then I decided that it really WOULD be best for her....now she's 5 weeks old and I've been exclusively pumping....we're getting ready to go half and half with formula and breast milk though because shes SO gassy and fussy....but I plan on continuing to pump for awhile and at least through the flu season. I'd like to make it at least another 2 months?? IDK...Pumping hurts SO MUCH.... :(.....
I only bf my first two for 2-3 weeks...I felt really bad about it... with my first I was being selfish (and wanted my sleep) with my 2nd I was slightly selfish in that I didn't want to have to pump & dump for the 6 weeks following my gallbladder surgery
Now with this little man we are going strong 1 month in and I plan to either EBF and/or pump until 1 yr old (once I get a job it'll obviously be mostly pumping)...I've found that it has created a stronger bond with him than I have with the other two (not that I love the other two any less but you know what I mean).
So yeah...I still hold guilty feelings for not trying harder or having more support to continue bf'ing the first two but to look on the bright side we did share that special bond that you get w/ BF'ing for awhile
