My baby was born wednesday morning. since birth he wasn't able to latch on to me properly (his tounge is too short) so we have decided that I would pump and we would bottle feed, well because he wasn't eating, he stopped pooping so his bilirubin levels went up, not into the treat zone but they were high enough to keep us an extra day at the hospital, the other issues we are having is that he lost 10% of his birth weight, thankfully that has come back up...We have had a visiting nurse come to the house yesterday and today and prolly tomarrow they will come again. they do an assesment on Garrett and then do a blood draw and tell me to wait and see what the levels come back as and then we will go from there... but I guess I just want to ask what should I do... I am feeding him every 3 hours (8 times a day) and he is getting 60cc (2 oz) of breast milk a feeding, he is pooping regualarly now, so should I wait and see if his levels go down or should I be proactive and ask if we can treat him instead of playing the waiting game...
When my ds was born he was jaundice as well and the best thing to do was just feed him constantly....I would say feed him every 2 hours AT LEAST...my dr said to just bring him to the boob every time he fussed to just eat eat and eat. I would join the breastfeeding group and post bc they have helped tremendously!! g'luck xoxo
You are doing all that you can do. I would get him out in the sunlight as much as possible too. I've heard that the vitamin D is good for changing those numbers! Good luck momma!
I'm sorry your baby couldn't latch..I never heard of a babies tongue being too short though. I think you should do whatever you feel is best.
My DD had to stay in the hospital for 5 days for some antibiotics and for her jaundice. GL on what you decide mama! =)
I had to stay extra at the hospital too due to my daughters billi levels. My midwives reccomended feeding as often as possible as well as stripping her down to her diaper and laying her in the sunlight for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time (it was cold outside so we just laid a blanket on the floor in front of the glass sliding doors to our backyard)
We went through that with DS. I would just continue what you are doing and wait it out. It is very common with babies. One thing you can do is sit in a window where the sun is shinning in (if is is sunny out of course) and that will help. That is what they told me to do. GL mama and congrats!!
Feed on demand. Baby is way too young for a schedule. Sunlight helps too. If I were you, I'd call the lactation consultant from your hospital or La Leche League in your area to get help w/ the latch. Baby needs to be on the breast.
Congrats!!
