My son is going to be 2 at the end of March and he still doesn't feed himself. He'll feed himself with his fingers, but not by spoon or fork. So if it's in a bowl, he's not eating it unless you feed it to him. Part of it is because my MIL watches him and doesn't encourage him. She feeds him. Besides telling my MIL to encourage him and allow him to feed himself, what can I do to get him to self feed. My sister suggested putting the bowl with an extra spoon in front of him, but he plays with it for a little bit and then pushes it away. Then I end up feeding him. I can't do the "when he's hungry he'll eat thing" because my MIL will refuse! Please help.
have u tried putting the spoon in his hand and putting his hand in urs and helping him feed himself like that?..im not sure wut to tell u..my MIL was always the one to let my son self feed and i would try to not so he wouldnt get messy (i hate cleaning up food messes..lol..)..so maybe my MIL can give urs some advice..

This is what worked for us. We bought DD toddler silverware when she turned one and started doing it this way. She's 18 months now and has been a pro for a while.
As for your MIL.... tell her to get on board or he's not going to know how to take care of himself. It's an important step for them to learn
im not sure what to tell you. the only way they learn is by practicing so she really needs to let him do it. i would have a long talk with her and tell her its your kid she needs to do things your way. ive never known of a 2 yr old that didnt at least attempt feeding themselves. if she still doesnt do it you could always try having someone else watch him but i know thats not always possible
I just gave my kids toddler silverware and eventually they got the hang of it. My son is 18 months old and he is doing awesome.
