Breastfeeding trouble shooting...NOT an attack on moms who FF(PIOG)
Ok I want to start off by saying, you can BF or FF that is a moms choice, I am not knocking either choice. If you FF from birth or decided BFing is not for you that is YOUR choice.
I do know that there is a LARGE group of women who stopped breastfeeding because they felt or were told they HAD to stop. Either it was because of babies weight gain issues on babies part, low supply, medications and the list goes on and on.
Heres MY personal story: My oldest was 12 weeks when I went to my midwife for birth control, she gave me YAZ saying it was safe to take while BFing, within 24 hours my sons diaper counts ahd dropped SO far I had to suppliment formula. NO one told me that there was a way to get back supply so I stopped BFing totally.
With my 2nd I knew I was going back to school so at 3 weeks I started supplimenting here and there with formula, as I thought pumping would be a pain. NO one told me this could hurt supply. He for sure preferred the bottle, but we continued to nurse. WHen he was 5 weeks old my oldest got Rotavirus and was hospitalized, he almost died. The pediatrician said I could pass Rota in my milk and HAD to stop nursing or he would call CPS on me. I believed him and stopped..it was NOT true btw, that virus does NOT pass in BM.
With my 3rd I was determined to BF and with the help of people who could work me PAST the myths, through the rough times and corrected the bad info I had been given and was still given often, I was able to BF and work full time and never had to suppliment. Yeah it was kinda hard sometimes but we've made it.
If any mom would like some help, or has questions about how she could be more successful next time around feel free to post, PM me or whatever.
Keep in mind that even getting one drop of breastmilk is better than none so for those that tried and we not successful before, you have NOT failed.
Quoting TK87:My daughter actually lost weight when I got pregnant and eventually I wasn't making hardly any milk, so she had to get formula. I don't think there's a way to bring milk up if your pregnant. Is there? I don't plan on getting pregnant again, but i'm wondering.
While pregnant its hard, there is a suppliment called more milk too(or two) by motherlove.com that is safe to take while pregnant. Oatmeal is safe while pregnant too and will help. BUT pregnancy is a supply killer for sure I agree, I'm pregnant myself. For a child under 12 months sometimes formula or donor milk suppliments are necessary. You can use a supplimental nursing system so that the baby continues to nurse and get what breastmilk you do have and not cause a preference for the bottle.
That's really nice of you to offer assistance like this! I'm hoping to breastfeeding until child self weans next time rather than the two weeks I did because of complications on my daughter's end last time. I don't have any specific questions now though since I'm not even TTC until next year. Just wanted to say it's great of you to offer this!
