check the weight limit and height limit of his carseat. My DS is really tall. He was in a new seat by 6 months

it should be on a sticker on the side of the seat somewhere. It will have the weight and height limit...torso height

Check out the Car Seat Safety group here on CM. Tons of great info there.

He should have 1.5 inches of shell room above his head. Any less than that OR if he is over the weight limit it is time for a new rear facing seat.

You can move him to a rearfacing convertible when ever you are ready or when he out grows his infant seat. Neither an infant seat or a convertible is any safer its just a matter of preference. Some parents prefer a convertible from birth where as others like the convience of an infant seat.

Whenever you want, as long as it is before he reaches the weight limit or has less than 1" of hard shell above his head.  We did around 10 months.

Most infant seats the limit is 20lbs. check your manual for yours some do go higher. But if you want you can get a convertible and switch at any time as those usually start at 5lbs the higher weight varies
