Hi everyone -

I am honored to introduce you to Ellen Galinsky, a renowned child development expert, who will be in the group this week sharing her knowledge and answering your questions. I had the pleasure of reading her new book, Mind in the Making, last week on my vacation and know you will all enjoy getting to know her.

She'll be taking questions throughout the week in this thread. (Don't be shy, one lucky poster will receive a free copy of the book!)

Thanks Lisa

It is such a pleasure to serve as a parenting expert for your group. I was invited to share my experiences with you because I have been investigating the best research on how children grow and learn for my new book, Mind in the Making.

BABIES ARE AMAZING

I know from being the mother of two children myself that babies are amazing and exploring the research on children's development has only intensified this knowledge.  For example, children's brains appear to be wired to help them understand and know about the world. Scientists have found that this learning starts happening long before babies can be taught this knowledge.

Studies have shown that infants six months old and even younger have what has been called a number sense: they can detect the difference between large and small numbers of things.

And they have what I call a people sense where they focus on people's intentions versus seeing what people do as random movements in space as shown by the studies of Amanda Woodward of the University of Maryland. And as this video shows, they can even differentiate between people's intentions.

A QUESTION TO YOU:  Have you seen examples of these amazing developments in your children?

Wow I didn't know that - thanks for sharing the video that is really neat. I hadn't thought about it before, but I will definitely be watching out to see my baby's number, and people sense.

Welcome, Ellen! Thank you for spending time with us this week in Babies! Before heading in the lateral direction of being an Attachment Parenting Instructor and Lactation Consultant, I was in college majoring in Child Psychiatry. I am also a homeschooling mother. As you can imagine, your work is fascinating to me!

Answer: yes, I have made these observations in my children!
