During my frequent online searches for beautiful, bizarre or otherwise unique baby and kid rooms, I came across this decorating dilemma posed by Moxie9 in a chat board on The Bump (from The Knot):

“SO (Significant Other) and I have been discussing nursery ideas and, so far, the only one he’s liked is a Super Mario Bros. theme. Actually, he’s fallen in love with the idea (shouldn’t be a surprise to me–his degree is in game software development and now he develops apps for Android). Would this be tacky or awesome? Does it matter that this baby is girl?

I say the baby’s sex doesn’t matter, and it wouldn’t be tacky if done in a more subtle way, meaning a giant wall-sized Mario looming over a crib would be a bit much. As for awesome, I’d say no. But that’s just me. I’m not into video games and, therefore, I don’t find the theme awesome. Besides, why force gaming on a child? Especially with medical experts and parents debating whether too much gaming can harm kids. For instance, the America Academy of Pediatrics released a study earlier this year linking excessive gaming to anxiety and depression in kids.

The other thing about themed nurseries–whether Super Mario Bros., trucks or princesses–is that it may not fit the child’s personality or interests. My friend decorated her son’s nursery with laughing puppies. He’s 5 now and has always loathed dogs. Just hearing barks terrifies him.

But back to gamer-geek baby bedrooms. Moxie9 might onto something because several parents have successfully created nurseries based on Nintendo’s popular video game.

(Discovered this nursery thanks to The Girl Gamer, who wrote, “(t)he entire nursery was decorated in a Yoshi’s Island theme complete with Yoshi’s eggs, Baby Mario/Yoshi and Baby Peach/Yoshi decals on the walls, and tons of framed artwork from the game”).

What do you think of a video game-inspired baby’s room? Great idea or tacky? Harmless fun or negatively nudging kids into the gamer world?

I think it's freaking awesome! Now my husband wants to do something like this (not Mario) for our son when he gets his own room.

I wouldn't want it as a baby but when they're older it would be cool.

I think it's SO cute. It's one of those, "I wouldn't do it...but it's cute." rooms.

Thats so awesome!! We currently rent though so we wouldn't be able to something that cool at our place. However, when we are homeowners I would love to do something like this (theme wise, not this theme) in each of the girls rooms! Thanks for sharing!
