Rice, Hydrocortizone Cream, and Head and Shoulders....
My twins are 3 months old. The pediatricians in my area have all given me advice, and sometimes I think to myself, 'Surely I'm mistaken?' So I ask them again, just to be sure, and they say the same thing. The following are four of the big things I've been told by multiple pediatricians. I'd just like some mom's opinions, and have any of you been told weird things like this?
1. For eczema (one of mine has it very bad), put hydrocortizone cream on the worst places. The problem: the back of the label says 'Do not use on children under 2 years of age. Talk to your doctor.' I've been using the cream because my baby is miserable and it helps, and he doesn't seem to be having any problems with it.
2. For cradle cap, use some Head and Shoulders shampoo. Just don't get it in their eyes. The problem: Head and Shoulders is meant for adults? I haven't done this one yet, just waiting to see if it clears up on it's own first.
3. If your baby eats 5 times a day, they need around 5 oz each feeding. If they are still hungry after that, start putting 1 tsp rice per 2 oz. milk in their bottle. The problem: babies aren't supposed to have solids until at least 4 months, and most places say 6 months. I've been doing this, but doing more like 1/2 tsp per 2 oz milk.
4. If your baby doesn't wake during the night to eat, don't worry about it. They know when to eat. The problem: I was told this at the hospital a couple days after delivering. My baby would not wake, and I was stressed because I knew that I wasn't supposed to leave them without eating for at most 5 hours. My baby would sleep all night. They always have, even since then. Which I like, btw, because I get sleep, lol!
If your babies have eczema, I would NOT be giving them any rice cereal. I don't think it's necessary at any age, but definitely not at 3 months old.
What kind of detergent are you using? Any dryer sheets or fabric softeners? What kinds of lotions, shampoos and baby washes are you using?
Head and shoulders is pretty toxic. Have you tried coconut oil? It's solid at room temperature, so it's very easy to wash out. Put some on their head, comb it out (or leave it overnight) and rinse it off. It's great for eczema too.

I feed Alice whenever she is hungry. She is 6 months and only has bm. Solids will be added when she is 7-8 months.
I think waking to eat is important if the baby is really young and has a little jaundice or isn't gaining weight properly. If they sleep through the night at a young age, they will usually eat more frequently during the day to make up for those night calories.
For cradle cap, olive or coconut oil.

I don't know about the first two. For feeding, I just feed on demand and don't introduce solids until they are 8 months old. For sleeping, I only feed them when they wake unless they are underweight.
Night feedings, both the nurses at the hospital & my pediatrician said not to wake the baby, as long as they were eating well during the day. They would wake when they are hungry.
when the doctor told me the sleeping thing, the baby was a 5lb preemie, lol
