My dd just stopped nursing a few months ago, finally! But if I had to it do over I would've bf my son as well. I bought into the whole "I'm not making enough milk, he's starving" thing and ended up giving him formula. With dd I was much more relaxed, not as worried about production and when she demanded, I nursed. It was as simple as that. Yeah she was on my boob for about 5 months straight, hourly, everyday the whole first 5 months! But it was worth it. So much cheaper and I worked part time and pumped at work (usually for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day) still worth it. It's a lot of work but like anything else, if you're dedicated it will work out.
with my first I pumped until she was about 15 months and then extended formula fed her until she was 2 instead of going to whole milk. With my second I pumped until she was 17 months and then transitioned her to whole milk.
