OK we finally got our dream of a large house and signed the paperwork the other day. We are moving in in April after we have central heat and air installed as well as paint and do a few other things. We are extremely excited because we are finally gonna be able to say its our house and no longer be renting. Anyway the biggest thing is baby proofing and making it child friendly. We have 7 children ages 11, 9, 6, 6, 4, 2 the month we move in and a newborn. Its a 5 bedroom 2 bath two story home. One bedroom down stairs 4 upstairs. I know I need to put walk through baby gates on the stairs and install the alarm for the doors and windows and cabinet locks and things like that. Our there any tips or suggestions you have to be sure our house is as kid friendly as possible. I told my dh I want to find an area downstairs for the younger kids to play so I wont need to worry about what they are doing upstairs when I'm cooking or cleaning. My older kids will help some with that too.

Southeast Kansas in a small town. Its an older home with some updates but no central heat and air so we are having my dh's uncle do it. He does it for a living.

Are any of the kids sharing a room? Maybe have the downstairs room be a play room?

Yes the boys will be split 2 to a room. 2yr and 4 yr in one 9 and 5 in the other. My oldest DD will have her own room and my 6yr DD will have her own till our newborn is old enough to leave our room. Then they will share a room. It isn't working out currently to have our 11yr DD and 6yr DD share a room like they are now because for one the oldest is much more mature and has things the younger one isn't mature enough for and the younger one likes to play with the oldest' things and often makes a mess with them or breaks them. I wish my girls were closer in age but God didn't do that for some reason. We do plan to allow them a space for a play zone downstairs we just have to decide where at. We are planning to play around with layouts of things this week and find something for sure.
