Baby led solids ETA

How did it work for you and your baby?

ETA

The original title said weaning instead of solids. I have heard they are the same thing but to avoid confusion, I changed the title. It seems this is the most common term.

I'm a little confused about the terms baby led weaning and baby led solids, because starting solids isn't the same thing as weaning. I mean, my son still nurses all the time at 16 months, but he also eats plenty of solid foods.

My son is still a very happy little nurser, so I can't give my experience yet, on how he'll self wean, but I'll just tell you what we did with food.

At about seven months I decided to see how he would like some avocado.

He enjoyed it, and some banana after that, but he was pretty disinterested in food.

He acted like it was fun, but not important to him.

Then at 9 months he started getting interested, so I started branching out and giving him different varieties of flavors and textures.

His appetite has had ups and downs and like I said, he still nurses a lot.

Great. Just watch for the pincer grasp. DD developed that around 8 months and that's when I knew she was ready...along with the other signs, such as sitting unassisted, chewing, interest etc.

ETA: I was assuming you meant starting solids, but if you meant weaning completely from the breast, I don't have any experience with that yet.

I have been told it's the same thing but I will edit the title to stop the confusion lol. This was said by another mom that they are the same. I have heard both too.

Thank you.

Baby led weaning and baby led solids are two very differnt things....most moms add solids while baby is still nursing or being fed formula....

It worked for all of my babies.

We started between 7-10 months. Salmon, avocado, sweet potato, squash, ground turkey, chicken breast, banana, steamed veggies, edamame, quinoa etc.

Whatever we were eating, they got.

I like the idea. The more I think of it, the more I WISH I did it with my son. I like how it gives the child control instead of feeding them from a spoon and then giving them control later. It gives them a chance to work with pincer grasp more...I am thinking it also helps them with using a spoon earlier because they start this step early rather than being spoon fed. I would say that I more likely than not to use this method for this baby.

It offers more variety of foods and less fussy food time for later.

This is what I THINK...I have read some infromation though. Where is the best site for this, maybe a group?

It's true :)

It allows them to explore different textures, and regulate their hunger. They are less likely to overeat because it's a much slower process than an adult spoon feeding them bite after bite.

It's also way less messy :) They are so determined to get in in their mouths, and there is no spitting etc. like there is with a baby who either isn't ready for purees or who is bored by them. It allows them to feel like part of the family because they are eating the exact same things as everyone else and doing it independently.

Here is some information on baby led weaning from Babycentre Canada

Here is another site :)
