UPDATE: well ladies the day came and I had to take Dd to a pediatric dentist. He confirmed she had 2 cavities and said that the laughing gas alone wouldn't be enough for her cause she's too antsy and will not stay still during the procedure. He said he would have to sedate her. :( I am so nervous about it. The appointment is for next July 7th... I just hope my dd will be fine. Please mamas learn from this and brush your kiddos teeth often!

I took my dd to the dentist yesterday and they found 2 cavities. The whole visit was a nightmare. She hates doctors/ nurses/ dentists and whoever she sees with a scrub. Well she started screaming and at some moment I thought she would faint she was very overwhelm. I felt terrible. She's the happiest little girl. Never cries, never whines but it was terrible. Now the problem is they need to fix the cavities ASAP. They told me there are two options: putting her in a robe to keep her quiet but she will cry during the whole procedure or giving her something to sleep her through he procedure.
I don't think the first one is an option. She will be traumatized. But I am so afraid of he second option. I need your help mamas. Tell me what u think and if this has ever happened to you. Thanks ... :(

WHY are you having anything done to baby teeth that just fall out anyway? serious question. I never understand it.. wouldn't they not really matter since they fall out?

DD is only 8 mo and NO teeth so I haven't been there yet and don't know how it works :p

1 mom liked this
Baby teeth have an effect on the adult teeth.

I work in an ambulatory surgery center and we have pediatric dentists bring in kids almost every day for this.  My only advise is to remember that if they come out of anesthesia screaming, they're not in pain, just confused... and they won't remember it.  If I've learned anything at my job, it's that not every child with cavities is a victim of poor dental hygiene.  It can be due to medications (particularly asthma medications) that weaken teeth or genetics.  There are always risks when anyone goes under anesthesia so just be sure to follow all directions beforehand (no eating or drinking - not even gum or a mint) and your daughter should be just fine.

If the cavities are left untreated, they could abscess and cause a lot of pain for the kid.

try flossing the brushing start from the back to front, then the top palet of the mouth and the side of the cheeks. brushing alone is just like sugar coating since the rest of the food that wasent brushed off accumulates in the sides of the teeth causing cavities.

We brush our son's teeth twice a day...don't you think that's enough?

My daughter has had to have sedation, to have some dental work done. It is definetly the best option for little ones, that wouldn't be able to sit still and be calm enough!

Their recovery time is really quick!

This stuff always seems to be harder on moms...I remember the feeling!

Best of luck to you!

I wondered the same thing too.

Depending on the age of your kids, it might be a few years before they lose those baby teeth.

If you let the teeth "just be"....it could lead to further decay, that can cause pain (especially when they eat) and infection too.

Many times! My DD has an extreme phobia of dentists. We've even had to hospitalize her for some dental work and do it under anesthesia. Just pulling into the dentists parking lot would set my DD into such a fit that she would become hysterical to the point of throwing up and almost passing out, so mild sedation was a "god-send" to make her visits more tolerable for all of us. We went through 12 different dentists in 2 years to finally find a good periodontist that was understanding of our situation and had the experience to work with mild sedation. I never wanted to hold her down, restrain her or put her back in the hospital again for simple dental work. If you've found a pediatric dentist who will work with mild sedation...use them! Good luck!

My son actually just went through this. His were horrible. Which I still don't get, cause he brushes when his sisters do and their teeth are perfect. He had to get 6 caps and 2 fillings..apparently he got my families teeth..great. Honestly he went to sleep upset about the IV, and when he woke up, he had no clue what had happened...was still upset about the IV cause that was all he remembered..He was a little groggy for a couple hours..back to himself before dinner. Good luck hun
