 I always buy books and a doll or stuffed animal for first burthdays.

gift cards to different stores, like 10 to childrens place or claries.  McDonalds, dunkin donuts, so when they go out she can get a special treat, and mom say's (you) are treating her!

  I have to agree to rest BOOKS re the way to go!  there are plenty of them out there with sound buttons, my DD loved the 1's that made animal noises as we read , as you may know they have the picture's for them to know what button to press so it was always alot of fun seeing her learn these sounds

DD's party was last month. Her favorite gifts? A card that played music and a gift bag with a doggie on it. She didn't care about the actual toys! I'd play it simple and don't stress about it - babies like packaging and music!

 I usually make a quilt for the 1st birthday if I didn't make one for them when she was pregnant. Maybe a gift card to a book store so mom & baby can pick out a book.
