Is Tummy Time Absolutely Necessary?

I have a 10 week old and she absolutely HATES tummy time. My doctor says that some babies are just like that, and there's not much to be done about it. However, I read that tummy time is necessary for arm, back, shoulder and neck muscle development. So if my baby doesn't get her tummy time, does it mean developmental delays? Will she not be able to hold her head up on her own very well, or will it take her longer to be able to do it?

No. I never did tummy time because my son screamed and I don't voluntarily piss him off. I wore baby and he developed the same muscles. :)

I guess I did a little I'd lay on the ground and put him chest down on mine and I guess that was our tummy time. ;)

That's good to know. She screams when I put her on her tummy. I thought it was because I was doing it too early at first, but the doctor said it wasn't.

She may not like it.. but that doesn't mean you can't still do it in short periods... yea I think it's good for them but really what can you do if they hate it... I would just try to make it short and fun... do I think it will cause delays.. no I don't... she is still a tiny little thing and wants to be held close.. nothing wrong with that... don't stress over it... there are bigger problems to worry about.. :-)

No. Actually sitting a recliner (slightly reclined) holding the baby on your chest does the same thing.

Or propped up in bed or on the couch. Just hold up a toy and lie her on your chest. It does the same exact thing.

Mine hate tummy time. So I either put him on the floor and played until he started crying or I'd lay him down on me. He's developing fine. He's 18 months now.

I didn't notice tummy time to make much difference. Dd hated to be put down period and she developed just fine. Then again, both of my kids slept on their stomachs since day one.

my little guy was 2 1/2 months preemie and hated tummy time too and he was holding is head up at 5 months and crawling by 7-8 months and walking just after a year with no real tummy time. so I tried using the boppy  and proping his chest up on it and he tolerated that but not much. what I wound up doing is laying a blanket on the floor and laying him on his back and he would roll over on his tummy lift his head up then after a while get mad and I would put him back on his back and let him do it alll over again.
