I'm giving up nursing. I can't do it anymore. We've been fighting with thrush and its effected my nipples which are hurting so so bad it puts me in tears. Its been like this for two weeks now and I've still been nursing but I'm at my breaking point from the pain. I got her the best stuff for her at the most important time, and I will pump as long as I can, but this momma is done nursing.
We had a great run baby girl

Don't feel bad. You have to take care of yourself if you are going to be able to take care of your baby. ((hugs))

Have you been treating it on your nipples as well? My older daughter got that, and it definitely hurt, but my doctor gave me some cream for my nipples to use as well as the meds for her mouth, and it started getting better within a couple of days. Weeks of that.... yuck. Crappy deal.

Of course if you feel you need to stop go with your instinct. But the doctor could give you a prescription cream for your nipples if you want to keep trying.

Maybe you need a stronger cream? Even if you stop nursing, you need to get rid of the infection. And you may not be all the way dried up by the time it's cleared up with all the passing it back and forth stopped. So you may be able to start again (although you'll have lost a lot of supply and have to supplement), if you want to. Just some suggestions, cuz it sounds like you really don't want to be done forever.

Have you tried gentian violet for the thrush? You can get it at any pharmacy. They keep it behind the counter. Just have to ask for it. Paint it on your nips and areola and nurse. That way both you and baby get treated. I will warn you. It will turn baby's mouth purple so you'll want to put lanolin or petroleum jelly on baby's face where it might touch your breast.
Married to Russell (7/27/09), Momma to Haydn (5/27/10) and Donavyn (8/1/12).
I know how hard it is to deal with thrush. When we had it the Dr prescribed all purpose nipple cream and the yeast infection pill. I can't remember the name now, sorry. Plus my son had to take nystatin.
I hope you feel better soon. Ps whatever you decide will be ok. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty.

Unless the doctor treats both you and baby, the thrush will come back. Also, weaning sets you up for mastitis which is MUCH worse than thrush.
If you come over to the breastfeeding moms group on cafemom the ladies there can help you get rid of the thrush in both you and in baby as well as help you with the pain until it is gone.
