A cleft palate is just a hole in the roof of the mouth, you wouldn't have been able to tell unless you looked inside of his mouth. He's had two surgeries to close it, both were before he was a year old.

just normal dental check ups, he does go twice a year to a cleft clinic, they track the progess of the surgeries (he had 2), and help with speech and such things.
