Babies sleep patterns change very often.  He could be going through a growth spurt.  Is he eating during those times when he wakes up?

In vain he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Yup! Its normal when going thru growth spurts or teething or even if they are sick. But most likely your precious one is growing :)

Could be teething, growth spurt, or a change in his sleep pattern. Any change in routine?

However, around 3-4 months, my seemingly awesome sleeper (both my kids!) became HORRIBLE sleepers. Just something about that age. It'll get better!

They go through all sorts of sleep changes in the first year or two... Just wait for 7-9 months!

This!

4 months is a common age for sleep regression.

Yes, it's normal especially when teething and growth spurts are involved.
