Ten Recipes for Natural Baby Food in the Crockpot

The slow cooker is great for dinner, fabulous to make food that tastes great and allows you to find an extra hour during the day – but have you thought about using the slow cooker for baby food? Think about it, you can create baby food for the entire week in just a few hours and create natural and healthy food for the baby.

Ten slow-cooker baby food recipes that won’t make you gag when you open the container:

Apples and Pears
Combine cinnamon, raw sugar and eight apples and pears (cubed) together in the slow cooker. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water combined with the apples (depending whether you add more apples) and cook for 4-6 hours on medium. Stir occasionally. You can mix it up using pumpkin pie spice, or nutmeg.

Carrots with Ginger
Ginger has wonderful antioxidant properties and takes carrots to the next level of taste. Plus, it helps to introduce new flavors to an old favorite. Use two tablespoons of ginger per pound of carrots. Cook with 1/2 cup of water and puree to desired consistency after cooking for 4 hours on medium.

Yellow Squash
Remove the seeds and inside from the squash, peel and cube. Use 1/4 cup of water with the squash and cook for 2-4 hours on medium. You can either puree the squash with an immersion blender or mash with a fork, depending on the stage of the baby. Yellow squash pairs well with apples for baby food in the slow cooker.

Chickpeas and Cauliflour
Looking for baby food that is packed with proteins and nutrients? Look no further than chickpeas. One cup of chickpeas and cauliflour florets (about 3 cups) combined with 1/4 cup of water makes a delicious and healthy puree, perfect for first time foods. Make sure to wash and drain the chickpeas before adding into the slow cooker and cook on medium for four hours.

Chicken and Butternut Squash
Combine one chicken breast with 2 cups of butternut squash, cubed, with a small bit of your favorite seasoning and 1/4 cup of water for baby food that introduces fresh chicken into the diet of your little one. Cook for four hours on medium until you are able to puree the food with an immersion blender to the desired consistency.

Yellow Squash and Garlic
Combine a large yellow squash with a couple of cloves of garlic and 1/4 cup of water to create a puree that is filled with the fresh flavor of squash. This is going to be nothing like the squash baby food that you are accustomed to, and is going to be a delicious addition to the baby food meals. Cook for four hours until you are able to mash it with a fork.

Slow Cooker Oatmeal 
You can make oatmeal in the slow cooker and combine it with the fruit of your choice. For first foods, you can grind the traditional oats into a fine powder. For every 1/4 cup of oats you should use 2 cups of water. Cook for two to hour hours to create an oatmeal that can be frozen and combined with breast milk, formula or fruit.

Broccoli, Green Beans and Kale 
Broccoli, green beans and Kale can be combined in the crock pot (a couple of cups of each) with 1/4 cup of water to create green and healthy puree that is packed with nutrients. Similar to the other recipes, cook for four hours on medium.

Blueberry, Apple and Pears
4 apples, 2 pears and a pint of blueberries are going to create a nutrient packed puree that is going to begin to introduce the taste of blueberries. Cube the apples and the pears, after peeling and coring and combine with the washed pint of blueberries and water. Let cook for four hours or until can be mashed or blended to desired consistency. It’s a great choice to combine with cereal, or yogurt for breakfast.

Squash/Sweet Potato Puree
Combine a couple of sweet potatoes that have been washed and cubed with a squash that has also been peeled and cubed, with 1/4 cup of water into the slow cooker and you have a sweet potato puree in it’s easiest and purest form. Cook for four hours in the slow cooker and puree with an immersion blender for an easy meal of first foods.

After the meals have been made and pureed, you can free in baby food trays and pop them out, into marked Ziploc bags for future use. In a couple of days, you can easily make enoughorganic baby food for the entire month. Compare this with the $1.68 packages of organic baby food we have purchased in the past, and it’s a big way to save!
