Generally, a baby is conceived two weeks prior to one's period. Hormone levels are high enough for some home pregnancy tests about a week before the missed period.

You should get the book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility. It will tell you everything you ever wanted to know, and then some, about your body and how it works regarding conceiving and preventing pregnancy.
