We never gave baby food. It's pointless. We just offered what we were eating like soft carrots, watermelon, shredded chicken, etc.

His primary source of calories should still be breastmilk or formula. Offer him small pieces of whatever you're having only after a full nursing session or bottle. It doesn't have to be every meal or even every day at this stage. Mine were carnivores; I shredded chicken or pork, or broke up ground beef very small. Small chunks of avocado and sweet potato are good. He may have a bit of trouble transitioning from pureéd food; mamy moms don’t use it at all but go straight to table food. Let him play with it; it is not crucial to his nutrition until he is a year or so old.
