Baby is sick... help!

My six week old is sick, and I'm wondering if anyone might know what it can be. I'm worried, because he is awfully young to be sick. He has no fever right now, but a few days ago he had a slight cough, and now he's coughing and sneezing and has watery eyes. He has dark green diarrhea and keeps bringing his knees up to his chest (like he's in discomfort). He is crying and crying, it's hard to make him calm down. He'll be sound asleep and wake up screaming. Last night, he couldn't stop for two hours straight. In between crying, he is his normal happy self, cooing and moving around, etc, but then all of a sudden he'll start crying again. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning, but in the meantime, anyone know what it might be? Is it just a cold? Anyone have a baby this young who got sick? I feel like a terrible mother.

well i dont have much to say with one that little except you arent a bad mother.. its that time of the year.. my poor 8 month old cant kick her cold.. she had a viral infection.. then ended up with a second viral infection and something called bronchiolytis.. so yea i feel you but its not our faults.. try to put him in the bathroom in something warm and turn the hot water on and let the steam work for him.. um.. i think too young for baby rub.. but a humidifier i think works.. i think its a humidifier.. and umm...suck his nose.. itll suck and hell scream but its good for him...umm.. the diarhea i would try maybe a tiny bit of pedialyte to make sure he doesnt get dehydrated.. is he bf or ff? coat his boat with diaper cream so he doesnt get a rash.. id also maybe try a baby massage on his tummy.. not a hard one but he might have gas pains so mylicon works wonders and i think he can have it that young.. if u dont wanna do that id def try to rub his belly a little bit and see if it helps...sorry i cant help moire but remember its not your fault and u are a wonderful mom. :)

It sounds like he may have a lil bit of colic and the other may just be a lil cold. Or i could be allergies with the water eyes. Thats all i can tell you. I hope you find out more at your appointment tomorrow. Good Luck with the rest of the day. Wish I could help more but you aren't a bad mother. Both of my girls have been sick with a cold for a couple of weeks now and we just can't seem to shake ours.

Colds and the tummy flu are going around.  My little guy has the belly flu right now.  He is almost 3 months.  You are not a bad Mom.  It happens to all of us.  The problem is there is not much you can do.  Go in the bathroom close the door and turn on the shower really hot.  Let the steam work for him.  Also keep his nose clear.  That will help him eat.  As for the belly my peditrician has a website and here is what it says to do.  I hope this helps.

Call 911 Now If:
Not moving or too weak to stand

Call Us Now If:
  • Your child looks or acts very sick
  • Signs of dehydration (e.g. no urine in > 8 hours, no tears with crying and very dry mouth)
  • Blood in the stool
  • Fever > 105°F (40.6°C)
  • Age < 12 weeks with fever > 100.4°F (38°C) rectally
  • Abdominal pain present > 2 hours
  • Vomiting clear liquids 3 or more times
  • Age < 1 month with 3 or more large diarrhea stools
  • Passed more than 8 diarrhea stools in the last 8 hours
  • Severe diarrhea while taking a medicine that could cause diarrhea (e.g. antibiotics)

Call Us Within 24 Hours (Between 9am & 4pm) If:
  • You think your child needs to be seen
  • Mucus or pus in the stool for > 2 days
  • Loss of bowel control in a toilet trained child occurs 3 or more times
  • Fever > 3 days
  • Close contact with person or animal who has bacterial diarrhea
  • Contact with reptile (snake, lizard, turtle) in previous 14 days

Call Us During Weekday Hours If:
  • You have other questions or concerns
  • Diarrhea persists > 2 weeks or is a recurrent problem

Home Care
(Read "Call Us..." first):

Mild Diarrhea: Continue regular diet. Eat more starchy foods. Drink more fluids. (Exception: avoid all fruit juices and soft drinks because they make diarrhea worse).

Formula-Fed Infants (less than 1 year old) with frequent, watery diarrhea:
Start Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS):

  • ORS (eg, Pedialyte or the store brand) is a special electrolyte solution that can prevent dehydration. It's readily available in supermarkets and drug stores. (Note: formula is fine for average diarrhea)
  • Use ORS alone for 4 to 6 hours to prevent dehydration. Offer unlimited amounts
  • If ORS not available, use full-strength formula (unlimited amounts) until you can get some. Avoid Jello water, sports drinks, or fruit juice

Return to Formula:

  • Get back to formula by 6 hours at the latest (Reason: needs the calories)
  • Use full-strength formula (Reason: it contains adequate water)
  • Offer the formula more frequently than you normally do
  • Lactose: Regular formula is fine for most diarrhea. Lactose-free formulas (soy formula) are only needed for watery diarrhea persisting > 3 days
  • Extra ORS: also give 2-4 oz. of ORS for every large watery stool
  • Solids: Infants > 4 months old: continue solids (eg, rice cereal, strained bananas, mashed potatoes, etc.)

Breastfed Infants with frequent, watery diarrhea:

  • Continue breastfeeding at more frequent intervals. Continue solids as for formula-fed
  • Offer 2-4 oz. ORS between feedings for each large stool (especially if urine is dark)

Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if babies normally got sick this young, so knowing that it's normal makes it a little less scary. If I had the symptoms, I would think it was just a cold, and he hasn't had a fever yet, so it must not be the flu. I just hope he is able to fight it off with his young immune system. Man, the sound of a crying baby (the real cries!) is the worst sound in the world... it breaks your heart.
