Ok so my 8 week old son has had pooping problems for ohhh about 6 weeks, he just cant go without help and when he does it is sooo painful, I have taken him to the dr a few times, first itme they said put him on miralax...THAT STUFF SAYS FOR 17 yrs and OLDER!! and it made him scream worse than he does when he cant go!!!! Then I took him in again and they switched his formula to a soy based..which you would have thought they did that before the miralax... welll its been a week and that STILL is not helping. Saturday it got to the point where i couldnt stand seein him cryin anymore  so  I did the old thermometer trick...and it worked...so I decided to do that  method as needed til I got him to the DR ONCE AGAIN.. sunday came and i coulnt get him to go with the thermometer either so i call the ER and the oncall dr said to use a glycorin supp. ...did it...didnt work...so i took him to the ER she ..they scraped him out a little and did an xray to see how much he had left...and told me to take him to the drs first thing monday but couldnt get him in until tuesday...so i take him in yesterday and now she wants me to give him prunes in every bottle 3ml milk of magnesia everyday and 3tbl of miralax a day and supositorys..doesnt all that sound like a bit to much?  what do you mommys think?

It sounds super crazy because thats too much for a small baby to take in all at once. Try a little bit of water...it made a really big difference for my daugther. She used to get sooo red and cry sometimes when it just didn't come out and when it did it came out so solid it wasn't like loose poop.

I was always told and gave my daughter some dark corn syrup in her bottles with her formula...worked like a dream

That does seem excessive.  I would say trying one thing at a time makes more sense than doing everything all at once.  I used dark corn syrup also for my daughter- a couple tsp. in 1 oz. water/ 1 oz. juice (I would use prune juice).  That worked for awhile then at one point I did have to get something from the dr.  He gave me Kristalose (lactulose)- which only has adult dosage on it, but he told me how much to use for her.  It was a powder I had to mix w/ water and then I only gave her like .5-1 ml and I used it every 2-3 days.  And now she's pooping like a pro on her own.  :p  If it's an option you may want to see about switching drs, I would really question using all that stuff at one time on your baby.   Good luck

It sounds like beyond too much. First, I would go to your local health food store (I like Supersupplements myself) and ask them what you can use on your baby. Then, I would find a new doctor.

Wow I can't believe they would suggest that much on a 8 week old. I would try one or the other but not all at once. Maybe try 1/4 of a teaspoon of milk of magnesia for a few days and see what happens. And I would definitely think about changing doctors.

ok we had this problem with my oldest when he was a newborn, i agree with the others get a new ped first off, they should have got him in right away thats ridiculous, being backed up can be a serious situation if not dealt with correctly especially in a newborn!

with my son we used a little bit of karo syrup in his bottle, it wont make him go will just soften it so not so hard, then what the specialist we saw had us do was take your pinky finger making sure the nails are cut really short and put vaseline/lube on it and then slowly insert tip of your pinky and massage babies rectum in circular motion on all sides, this will loosen up the area and works much better than the thermometer especially if baby has a rectal fissure, the thermometer could make things worse. If he has a fissure he could be instinctively holding his bowel movements in cuz he knows it will hurt and things will only get worse! good luck let us know if anything helped!

My son had/ has pooping problems on and off and he's 8 months old.   Miralax was recomended to us too..we use a very low dosage once in a while.

But what I really wanted to comment on is that I strongly reccomend switching peds.  Any problem you have with an 8 week old should be dealt with immediately..I can't believe they "didn't have time" for you until the next day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That is absolutely outrageous.  Switch doctors as soon as you can.  And tell them why you are doing it too.  8 weeks old!! I can't believe that they are blowing you off like that....

My DD is 8 weeks old and has had the same problem from birth.  She is now on Soy formula,  and once a day she gets 1/4 prune juice to 3/4 ounce water.  Also every couple days if she hasnt gone then she gets a suppository.   A suppository is not medicine so it wont hurt him,  just helps him to release it either.   Her pedi wants to stay away from all the medicine because she said her little body would be on over kill and she is just to young to start all that.   The prune jucie does wonders for her and it giving her a little extra water.  Her poops are still hard but nothing painfull like it was.   Good luck.  I know how hard it is to see you LO in so much pain.

I use mineral oil with my daughter. Just a tiny tiny tiny little drop on a spoon. Not much because it will give them dihherra. It is all natural so it won't harm her. Just use a little bit though.
