what do you do about a potential ingrown toenail

My son is 4 months and he has some skin growing kind of around the side of one of his big toenails. I wait until he has a bath and use my nails to push the skin back away from the toenail as much as possible but I'm afraid it's going to become ingrown. The toenail isn't long enough at this point to trim--or I'm too chicken. Anyone have any tricks aside from just checking it every night and trimming the nail back when possible?

Babies nails are very very soft...I wouldnt worry too much about it.  I never cut my kids nails until they are closer to 2 years old.  Because they are so soft, the nails just rip on their own.  You could have the doctor look at it next visit.

my dd's looked as if they were gonna be ingrwn but i just left it alone and it worked itself right...i'm not sure about your LO's though. all i can think is soak it in warm salt water...i'd ask the pedi first though
