Pregnancy and Negative Urine Tests

I'm almost 100% certain that I'm pregnant.  I am 25 y/o married female with no previous pregnancies.  I have not had a period since AUGUST, and I am very regular.  I am not on birth control, but am not trying to get pregnant.  My husband and I are usually very careful about using a condom, but there was this one time...

Anyway, having figured out dates now, apparently that one time is exactly when I should have been ovulating.  The past few weeks I've been just wiped out tired, and noticed that I've been having to urinate more often than usual.  And, then I kinda noticed that I hadn't really been eating--just no appetite.  I'd think maybe I wanted to eat, but then I'd stand in the kitchen for 20 minutes, because food in general just doesn't sound good.  The real kicker was a couple nights ago I went over to my grandmother's and she was just putting dinner on the table.  My grandmother is an excellent cook, but the smell literally turned my stomach.  I've been a little stressed out, and this is really not a good time for me to be pregnant, so I've been a little concerned since my first missed period, but I've been trying to tell myself that it was nothing to worry about.  However, I did go ahead and take a HPT.  It was negative.  I've taken multiple HPTs in the last 3 weeks, and they are all negative.  I went to my primary care doctor, and all he did was a urine test (no exam, no bloodwork), and the Dr.'s urine test was negative, and HE pretty much just blew me off.  I went to a women's clinic and had blood drawn, but the results won't be back for about a week.  I have an appointment with my gyn, but again they couldn't get me in for over a week.

As much as I hate it, I know I'm pregnant.  I am.  Can't totally explain it, I just know.  And, if I'm not, something else is very wrong.  It just kills me not having medical confirmation.  I've heard that you can get a false negative on a urine test, but that usually that's from testing too soon (I'm 7 weeks to the day, from my last menstration; and almost 5 weeks from conception).  Shouldn't it be showing up on a urine test by now?  Has anyone else had a pregnancy with a negative urine test (this late), or know anything about it.  It's driving me crazy.  It just doesn't make sense.  HELP?!?!

I have a friend who didn't get a positive on a hpt until she was 10 weeks along. Everyone is different so maybe you should just wait a week or two then test again.

There are some cases where urine tests don't work right away... but also it is normal to miss periods a year without being pregnant . . . When I was married, I didn't get a period until the 4th month... the dr said it was just so much going on in my life that caused it...

I'm right there with you. Deep down I know I am pregnant again. It isn't a good time for me either. Just try not to stress(I keep telling myself this every day) If you need someone to talk to, message me. My family has a history of not getting positives. My Sister actually had to get a sonogram to prove she was pregnant with her first set of twins at 3 months.

It could be a hormonal imbalance.  I had many of the symptoms that you are describing a couple of months ago and I swore up and down that I was pregnant.  I never get symptoms like those with my cycles.  I kept getting negatives on my HPT's too, but AF did eventually show up.  A hormonal imbalance can sometimes mimmick pregnancy symptoms.  You might want to mention this to your doctor and see what they think.  Good luck to you!

SYMPTOMS OF HORMONAL IMBALANCE:

  • Changes in menstruation
  • Acne
  • Basal body temperature
  • Oily skin
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Anxiety
  • Low sex drive
  • Headaches
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Endometriosis
  • Water retention
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTI’s)

Some women have extremely low hormone levels, even at what would be 7 weeks. It is possible that the tests were wrong.

Another explanation of your symptoms is that often, when women are stressed or think they may be pregnant, it can cause them to have exaggerated symptoms mimicking pregnancy. These false symptoms can be VERY convincing.

You'll just have to wait for the bloodwork to come back and see for sure. If the bloodwork is negative, then you probably aren't pregnant.

Have you thought about maybe taking a trip to the er? Maybe tell them that you arent feeling very well and your symptoms they can do a blood test and you have your results in less then an hour? I know i cant stand waiting for test I always try to rush things.... Good luck

you rockThanks everyone.  Blood test came back negative (and all other blood tests (Prolactin, Thyroid, etc, were normal), which I guess is good and not.  I still feel that something isn't right.  I don't have any severe symptoms, but the absence of AF (August is a long time without a visit), coupled with extreme fatigue, no appetite, and mild lower abdominal pain (not cramping), concern me.  And, the way the docs keep blowing me off irritates me.
