I personally hate "What to Expect when You're Expecting". It goes over so many possible problems that will most likely never affect you.

I read the following books and LOVED them:

Your Pregnancy, Week by Week

Spritual Midwifery (Ina May Gaskin)

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth

Your Best Birth (Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein)

This is my first as well, but I was given a week by week book that I really like. I like being able to see what is happening this week, and how big the baby should be and all that stuff. It has other stuff that doesn't really apply to me, but I really like that one. I think it is just like pregnancy week by week or something like that.

I loved the "What to Expect When your Expecting"  book... you can get it at wal mart...  The Expectant Father is a good one for dads!!

Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth is one of my favs...

Stay away from What to Expect ... it has a lot of false and outdated info.

My Ob/gyn gave me a book with my 3rd pregnancy. I read so many books with my first two that i was suprised to find one that had new and useful info in it. She gives this book to all here patients ;  Your Pregnancy & Birth - I have the fourth edition, dont know if there is a new one yet but its put out by  - The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists - womens health care physicians.    I recommend this book to anyone new to pregnancy/delivery!!!  Best wishes!!!

Why is the book What to excpect when you're ecpecting not a great book?  I saw it at the store and I was quite interested in buying it because it had some topics that interested me.

I agree.. whats wrong with that book?  I used it for all 3 of my pregnancies and found it very informative...I do think that if you use an outdated version it is of course going to give you out of date information but thats just common sense!  Actually I was curious so I googled top pregnancy books and the first link that popped up was Amazon and the first rated book was What to Expext When Your Expecting..

but then again everyone has thier own preference to books bc everyones tastes are different!

I am just not crazy about the format, how it is written based on questions, and does not necessarily follow the pregnancy timeline as far as when they introduce information. I also found that they are extremely doctor/intervention oriented which I disagree with. I believe that women's bodies know how to get throught pregnancy and birth and that only on rare occasion should a doctor intervene.

It is also so technical that it treats pregnant women like they are dealing with something. It does nothing to empower and bring confidence to the pregnant momma. Confidence and empowerment is so important to have while pregnant, and especially in delivery.

I think if you read it in conjunction with other books, you will get a lot of good information, but you will open yourself up to many other options that the book does not even come close to addressing.

I had another pregnancy book--but I cant think of what it was--I think it was a week by week book...anyways this was the one that stuck out in my head...And again--everyone is different on what they like!  I prefer something that is flat out giving me the basics and a guideline for what can happen during pregnancy and not a book with stories about labor--thats what my friends on here are for!  LOL...   ;)

I'm finding The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth by Sheila Kitzinger to be very helpful.
