so i have been reading alot of posts where people say they cant change the litter pan and what not cause prego ladies CANT

i have been prego twice and have had two very healthy babies and the whole time i have had two cats indoor and HAD TO CHANGE the pan i dont have anybody to do it for me my hubby was on deployment and i wasn't going to let it just sit there

i covered my nose with a mask and wore gloves and also washed my hands very good after

My ob said its fine as long as you take precaution

how many of you mama's have to take care of this on your own? what does your dr say about it being safe or not ?  whats your take on it

just curious

The risk does exist. Perhaps they are just being precautionary.

I kicked my cat out of the house when I got pregnant. Not only because of the litter box but because I didn't want a cat around my newborn. My baby is more important.

I change the box but wear gloves. as long as your not touching the poo you're fine, thats where the toxins are. and i believe you have to have an open sore for the bacteria to even get in your system? Im not sure thats accurate just what ive heard.

NO NO NO NO NOOOOO!!! you can get toxoplasmosis and actually i tested positive for that in my 1st trimester when i was pregnant with my daughter! I had to go see a specialist and i learned about all the problems that come from toxoplasmosis and i wont even as much as PET a damn cat while pregnant because of all the bad things that can happen!

I stopped when I found out I was pregnant. My husband was more comfortable being the one to do it and I wasn't going to argue. It wasn't a "Come on, really?" thing that I couldn't do but you can get sick from it and my husband didn't want to take that chance even with gloves and a mask. Some just would rather not do it.

lol I did it when I was prego with my son! I think a lot of pregnant women become helpless the second they are pregnant. I am aware that some women have issues and their Dr will tell them not to do this or that but for the most part you can live a normal life. From what I hear if you have a inside cat you dont have as high of a risk cleaning the cat box anyway..but I guess its not up to me what others choose to do or not do.

what ever is best for you

i just personally wouldnt kick my cat out they are part of the family too and i made sure they didnt go around the baby they roomed with us the first few months anyway

i just washed my hands and took percation in every way for my baby and myself...and they are always up to date on shots and visits and indoor cats always

i know the risk exists but there are risks everywhere

foods outdoors etc...some of those are even really bad...like not eating cold meats and whatnot while prego etc...

true and i agree but some people just dont have the choice...well we can get rid of our pets but i wasnt going to
they are family too and a mask and gloves worked fine for me

:)

i only wish my hubby was home to help and do it but he wasnt he was overseas so i did everything on my own for both the prego's

Wow, I would never kick my cats out of the house b/c I'm having a baby.  It is irresponsible as a pet owner.    When you take on the responsibility of a pet, you need to ensure they are not abandoned when you can't or won't care for them anymore.  When you have an inside cat then throw them out to the elements, they are sometimes unable to adapt.

I have 2 cats inside.  I had my vet test them for Toxoplasmosis and they are both healthy.  I change my cat litter just like to OP.  I use gloves, a mask and wash my hands thoroughly once I am through.  I did alot of reading up on Toxoplasmosis and you actually have a higher risk of getting it from handling raw meat than you due from cat feces.  I wear gloves when I handle raw meat and of course wash my hands thoroughy afterwards.

I know that I will need to keep any eye on the cats around the baby but I don't plan on leaving the baby alone in the same room as the cats anyhow.  The cats are not allowed in the nursery so when the baby sleeps, the monitor will be on and the doors closed against furry intruders.
