Ok, so I have an abcessed tooth that started bothering me yesterday and I was trying to wait it out until Monday, but it got to the point where I can't open my mouth besides to scream, so yea, off to the urgent care center I went. He prescribed me some amoxicillin and naprosyn, after we had a little debate on whether or not hydrocodone or darvocets were safe during pregnancy. He was going to Rx me vicoden, but I made him go double check to make sure they were safe, same with the darvocets. He came back and told me that he could prescribe me Naprosyn and that it was a catagory B during pregnancy. I thought that was GREAT! I wanted an anti-inflammitory anyways. I'm not a fan nof taking narcotics, pregnant or not. So, I get my meds from the pharmacy, come home, take the antibiotics and one pain reliever, then about an hour later get bored and decided to look it up online. He forgot to mention that it can cause birth defects if taken in the last trimester!! I'm 33 weeks pregnant and scared SHITLESS. I made such an effort to find painkillers that were SAFE for me and my baby and he picks the one that can HARM my child and cause birth defects!

What can I do? I called the nurse line at the hospital. They told me the antibiotics were safe, but to definately get a hold of the doctor, which I did immediately. I'm waiting for her to call me back, but I'm really worried. I don't know what to do! It's too late for me to puke it back up and I'm terrified of the damage I may have just caused my baby! I feel like the biggest piece of **** right now. Why did I trust that doctor before looking it up my damn self?!

  • I'm sorry I can't say much, but I dont THINK taking 1 pill would do much harm. Def dont take more, and call your own doc ASAP. Make sure you have the stupid prescribing docs name and info, just in case. I think most of us trust doctors, esp after you asked to make sure and she checked it. Try not to stress out, itll just make it worse. Drink water, flush your system, and try to calm down. Whats done is done, so now all you can do is follow up with your doc to check on everything. I'll keep you both in my prayers, and please keep us updated! If anything now we know not to just trust what we're given :/

  • I definately did NOT take more. I saved the bottle, though for future reference. My doc never called me back. She must be busy catching babies tonight, so I'm going to call first thing in the morning, right after I call the urgent care that gave me the meds. So, not only am I still in excruciating pain, the pills I took that were supposed to help have the potential to hurt my baby. This is a CRAPPY DAY!

  • I took Darvocets and Tylenol for my teeth when I was preggo with DD... she turned out normal... as far as I know they're about as safe as it gets... I dont think one pill will hurt you or your baby... usually you have to take/do something regularly for birth defects to happen. Be thankful you figured it out before you had taken a bunch of the pills... talk to your dr and hopefully she can put some of your fears to rest and give you something safe that will help...

  • I took hydrocodone for alot of my pregnancy with DD, for chronic migraines (later found out it was caused by eye strain cuz my prescription on my contacts changed with pregnancy) but I was told that they are a catagory C, and to use them sparingly, b/c it's not that they AREN'T safe, but they ARE a narcotic, and when you get a buzz off of them, so does baby. Also not alot of research had been done as to the effects ON baby in utero...but DD is a happy healthy 3 yr old...

  • I am sorry you are having to go through this, but I think you are fine with just the one dose, just don't take anymore...I have learned not even to trust my regular doctor when it comes to what I can and can't take, they are always trying to get me to take sudafed (can't because of high blood pressure and issue with my heart) and then there is tylenol,(my liver doesn't break things down well, and tylenol requires your liver to metabolize it, which make your liver enzymes go crazy) so after the suggestions for it, I remind them I have these issues...then they say, oh well that changes things...and basically I am always SOL...I have learned to be very proactive in my healthcare, cause someone can kill you just by not realizing something, and because they are your doctor you figure that you are in good hands...you just have to be careful...Sorry I rambled on about that...but I am sure you will be fine and your baby, they have to have repeated exposure to something like that...just call your doctor tomorrow and let them know what has happened, and that doctor should be reported...what if it happened to be a fatal mistake with someone else...Good Luck momma and take care! I hope your tooth is better soon!

When i was pregnant with my daughter i had like 4 root canals while pregnant and ALOT of dental problems thanks to my pregnancy lol. Anyways i was prescribed tylenol with codine and that is safe during pregnancy i took it in my second trimester and third and had a healthy happy baby so if you want to then ask for that?
