Okay..so in 2004 I had my DS..with epidural..everything was fine. In 2006 I had my DD..that epidural not so great..it worked and everything..but when it was put in my back I think maybe they hit a nerve.
Everyone who's gotten an epidural knows when they insert it, it has to "touch" a nerve(I believe the sciatic nerve?). And when it hits that nerve you get a tingly/sharp/shock feeling in between the injection site and your right hip..right?
So..when they injected the epidural for my DD in 2006, that shock feeling.. i felt shoot all the way down from the injection site down to my toes in both legs. It ended up working..I was numb and everything, but I am pretty sure they must have hit a nerve, possibly damaging it. My legs were both weak for the next few days, which I know is supposed to be normal afterwards, and after the few days I seemed to be back to normal.
Now it is 3 years later and I am 13 weeks pregnant and keep getting this pain on my left side(and have been since i was about 6 weeks along)..I'm pretty sure it's more towards the back...towards my hip. I have been looking around and thought maybe Sciatica which involves that nerve, but my legs and feet are not numb or anything..so IDK! I mentioned it to my Dr. and she said if there's no blood we won't worry, but it has to be something, and I know with the uterus growing and stretching it does put pressure on different areas. And like I said I think it may be on that nerve.
Anyone have any advice on what this could e or experiences with epidural complications? Please help..thanks!
When I have had sciatica, never any numbness, but I always get imediate relief from a chiropractic adjustment. If this might be related, you can try that, too.
But I have doubts that this is "sciatica". The epidural has risks for complications, this could be from that. I haven't had an epidural, but I think that your postpartum experience wasn't "normal," exactly, but is a complication or "side effect."
You might have to just work through the discomfort and keep trying to find ways to get more comfy. The chiro, acupuncture, massage, etc., might help a bit.
Good luck!

Thanks I was definately going to call a chiro. on Monday!
With my DD I had 4 botched epis before the 5th worked. He hit spinal fluid, so I had spinal headaches for a few weeks afterwards. With DS it took 4 tries before it worked. I have a relatively large amount of scar tissue from the botched epis right around the insertion point & I have a lot of the same kind of pain you describe. Stretching & going to physical therapy really help to alleviate it. I get massage, water therapy, & a lot of back and leg stretches at PT.
REST IN PEACE, MY JACK JACK. 6-5-08 to 8-10-08

Good luck with that! It always helps me out 100%, I hope it helps you, too. My mom suggests I trying an osteopath instead (less harsh adjustments?), but I haven't investigated that option yet. You can check into that if you're curious, too.

With my daughter in 2000, the epidural didn't take so they did a spinal block. I periodically have severe back pains... the ones that start in your lower back like a pulled muscle, then spread into your hips, butt and thighs. It truly feels like a pinched nerve. I mean, I have to try different methods of rolling out of bed and can hardly even get up off the couch. Walking is torture. Ibuprofen would always help, but I can't take that now and tylenol sucks. My doctor even gave me tylenol with codeine and that really didn't help either. I'm thankful this only happens once every few months or so, but I'm expecting it to get much worse as my pregnancy progresses.
This may not be a side result of the spinal block, but I can't think of any other explanation.
