Hello Ladies,

I'm 38 weeks pregnant and this is my first. I'm really not sure how labor starts and need your expert advice.

Since last night i've been feeling real sharp sharp pain down there...it feels like if i was being stabbed down there....or someone was ripping me open. On top of that my stomach area becomes hard....like a rock. The pain is so bad. My questions is when should i call my doctor? what does real labor pain feel like? is it the same for every women?

Thanks,

Lilly

New Mommy to bee.

UPDATE:

I'm having these pains every hour....there not consistent pain wise. My stomach hardens every time I feel these pains. I dont have the pain around the whole belly. so i'm guessing its false labor. I' going to ride it out till tomorrow if I feel the pain every hour then i will call my doctor.... and have him test me for a UTI since im known for those....I will keep you ladies posted once the doctor calls me back.

Thanks for you feedback :0)

From what your describing I don't think its labor but you could call your doctor to make sure (it might be very early labor)..I'm 38 weeks and have been having those things happen for about a week now lol.. but if it is labor let me know..lol

im in my first pregnancy too, so I have yet to experience labor...but i know the hardening of your stomach is contractions...and the pain down there might be fromyour baby dropping??? i dont know since im not experienced yet but it might be safe to call your dr and just ask.

One thought--this could be uti that will cause contractions, which is your stomach getting really hard.  I would run it by doctor and see if they want you coming in.

How far apart are these pains? Are they happening at regular intervals?

If they are not happening at regular intervals, they are probably braxton hicks contractions or just your body preparing for real labor.

If you can time them and they are regular and/or getting closer together and more intense, it could be early labor.

I would wait before going to the hospital though. If it is early labor, they may try to admit you and the longer you are there, the more likely they will try to use pitocin and push for an epidural. You won't have as much freedom to move around either.

The hardness of your tummy is a contraction.. whether they are braxton hicks or the real thing i cant tell you.. but you can tell by:

how often are they happening?? Try timing them.. if they are timeable and getting stronger and getting closer together then your probably in labor.

Its your choice when to go in. Some people like to stay home as long as possible.. others like to go in right away...

I would say time them, and if they are consistent, call your doc at least... if not head to the hospital!

Good luck momma!

update us when you know!!!

How far apart are the pains and the hardening of the stomach? It sounds like you might be having contractions. I know when I had my contractions my whole stomach went hard and there were sharp pains but every woman is different.

I would call your doctor and ask

does your whole belly hurt like menstrual cramps but all the way to the top of your belly? if so then you are definately having true contractions... i'd call your ob
