I need some advice, although it's not pregnancy related
Well I'm going to try and keep it short. I have 3 children, a 3 year old and 13 month old twins, and I am now 24 weeks with a 4th. My husband is going to school in another state and won't be here for another 6 months or so, and we are getting a little lonely here without him so were thinking of a pet. I am trying to decide between a puppy or a kitten. I know with the 3 kids I have now, either is going to be more work but I just think it would be great for the kids, and I love puppies and kittens. So what do you think?
I personally wont get a cat until my baby is older. Only because they are known for suffocating and the litter box stinks if its not changed daily. And they scratch and dogs are just more of a companion than a cat. Its better to get a puppy than a dog too because the puppy can be raised up with the kids and learn not to jump and to be friendly with the little kids. I would suggest a small dog too. Big dogs are VERY difficult to care for while you have 3 kids. And any dog is really great with kids if they are raised with them. If a chihuahua was raised with kids then its gonna be great with them. But if you bring a adult dog in the house that hasnt been raised around kids well you might have a problem, So I vote PUPPY all the way.
i vote puppy because you don't want to chance changing litter box when your are pregg. I love dogs and puppies, but they are a lot of work in the beginning. Just prepare yourself for raising a pup like you would a baby, getting up in the night to take it out.. hey are so good though.
I have a big dog (newfoundland, about 140lbs, she is 2 years old) and sure she's big but not much more work than a small dog. she loves kids too. it's all in what you want and what you are willing to work for.
:)
A large breed dog is best for kids because they love kids and can be really good companions. Golden retrievers and labradors are really good dogs for kids. If you don't want a really big dog, I recommend a Jack Russell or a beagle. They are very social and a little more hearty than some of the other smaller breed dogs. Little dogs are often afraid of small children and as I am learning with my 5 yr old and chihuahua puppy, small children LOVE to pick up and hold small dogs!!!! I say no to kitten because cats aren't really social. They will play as kittens but when they get older, they just want to be left alone. At least in my experience. Good luck!!
Thanks ladies!! I was leaning more towards a puppy too. I had a puppy when i was a kid and she was my best friend, we ended up putting her down when I was 8 months prego with my oldest. I will definitely be getting a PUPPY and not an adult dog, I want the pup to grow up with my kids.

You can raise a small dog to be good with kids as far as not biting or snipping at them, but it is much harder to get a young child to be good with your small dog! LOL My puppy loves my 5 yr old, but my 5 yr old won't stop picking her up and we have all tile flooring! She only weighs 5 lbs and she probably won't get much bigger. He also doesn't understand the concept of GENTLE!
Puppy because you can potty train them to go outside, and wont have to worry about the little ones getting in a litter box. Dogs can usually handle play from kids more than cats can.
But remember having a puppy is like having another baby..no lie!! Hard work for the first 6 weeks!!
a kitten for sure!
