I've always had this issue with anyone smoking around me when I'm pregnant and also about people smoking around my babies. For that reason, my husband has always informed his family that if I come over to their house for a get-to-gether, they need to smoke outside otherwise I won't come and I won't let my kids come. This hasn't been a problem so far. They always complied and though I could still smell it in the house, they wouldn't actually smoke while myself or the babies are in the house. I went over to my in-laws this past Friday and the smell of smoke was over-powering. All of a sudden, it got worse and I turned my head and saw that my mother-n-laws husband had just lit up a ciggy not more than 5 feet away from me. I don't know if he forgot about not smoking around me or didn't care.
With all the warnings, how can people not understand that it is dangerous to smoke around a pregnant woman or a newborn?
I don't know anyone who smokes indoors anymore. Most smokers in my city smoke outdoors. My big issue is now that the weather is rainy, people crowd under overhangs at every business, restaurant, entryway and smoke. I have to walk through the ciggy smoke of 5-15 people every time I enter a door in public.
On the downtown streets, that means that you could walk 2 whole city blocks through ciggy smoke since all the storefronts are connected. There is no way of avoiding it unless you choose not to leave the house.
Sadly, there is a state law in WA making it illegal to light up within 25 feet of any door, but law enforcement has yet to issue citations for the violations. Pisses me off.
When I complained to my mother about it, she made the comment that it was their house. I just said that I understood that but that they have known me for over 7 years and they know that I don't want to be around smoke when I'm pregnant nor do I want it around my babies. That is why my husband has always warned them before I come to their house, which isn't often, that they can't smoke inside or I won't come. I just can't believe that his mom's husband lit up with me sitting right there. I immediatly picked up my stuff, grabbed my daughter and left. I've already warned my husband that I will not be going to his parents house again, nor will my kids. If they want to see the new baby, they can come to our house. I won't be going over there for Christmas.

I agree with you all the way..my in-laws asked to keep my 2 children this past Sat. & I agreed..well my kids came home last night & I went 2 give them a hug & all I could smell was smoke. I have complained 2 my MIL numerous times but it doesn't work & then I catch her sneaking & smoking around my kids anyways. I am in college & when this baby is due I don't know what 2 do b/c she is the only person I have 2 keep my baby being that I can't afford my 3 yr olds daycare($110/wk) & then $140 for a newborn. My MIL has the same attitude like this is my house if you don't like it then you can leave. I just don't understand her...she just went into remission after finding out that she had cancer last year & COPD..you would think that would be enough for her 2 want 2 quit smoking. Don't get me wrong this is the sweetest woman in the world & she financially helps me & the husband out & plus more it's just the smoking issue. I just think no one should smoke around children...it should be their choice if they want 2 ruin their lungs or not. Over Thanksgiving my husband wouldn't smoke at his brothers house b/c his 94 yr old grandmother was there but here I was sitting next 2 him & he fired it right up after she left..I just don't understand ppl...it's so disrespectful.
It is like they don't believe the research about smoking being harmful to pregnancies.

I hate the smoking with my In-Laws. The sucky thing is that we own a double and two chain smoking siblings of my husband live upstairs. They smoke in the house, i've asked and my husband has asked no smoking in the hallways but then the idiot sister decides to "air out" the house by opening the kitchen door, letting it waft down here. We bought a HUGE air purifier and I turn it on in the hallway when I smell it but I made my husband march his butt upstairs and tell them NO more smoking in the house.....
My kids, myself and my husband do not need our lungs filled with toxins and our bodies and clothes to stink. When his family comes here they wonder why I stay downstairs....until my husband told them we refuse to allow me, our unborn and my son to be around the smoke and breathe it in. They no longer smoke when here and they air out the apartment....
But I don't get it, the brother and sister upstairs work with us to fix up this house, they bought new furniture for their apartment and they don't care that it reeks????? My extended family...probably 40-50 Aunts, Uncles and cousins all smoke and NONE of them smoke in their houses because they know it stinks....so why can't these siblings do the same.
I can't wait till the Summer when we finaly go house hunting and get a single family home where my kids are no longer exposed to smoke.
i use to be a smoker, quit when i found out i was pregnant, and now even the slightest hint of the smell makes me want to throw up. My honey isn't even allowed back into the house when he smells like smoke, so he has a smoking jacket that he wears outside to cut back on the smell.
I completely agree with you! There is also a study that shows children who grow up around smoker have a higher rate of becoming smokers when they are older because the smell if familiar. It also causes chronic bronchitis in some children... my dad had to quit smoking because it was killing me when i was little. Hopefully my honey can finally quit before she's born...
When his parents come they are following the same no smell rules... i don't want the smell to even come close to staying in my house.
