When did you go in for your first dr. appointment??
I just scheduled my first today and she asked me how far along I am (almost 4 weeks) and she seemed really surprised. Is it uncommon for women to call so early? I have a short cycle (25 days) and my scheduled period was 2 days ago (though I tested positive a day before that). This is my first time so I'm wondering if it was weird for me to go in that early.
I am living in Japan as a teacher and healthcare is different here. None of the monthly visits are paid by insurance (just the delivery) so maybe that is why they would schedule me anyway. Plus once you know you are pregnant you have to tell the city office about it.
I will be 5 weeks (from LMP) when I go in. Is that too early for an ultrasound? Do you think they'll just do a blood test? So excited but also very confused! lol

With my first, I had never been to see that doctor before and so they did not get me in till close to 10 weeks. This time, because i was already a patient, they scheduled me right away....maybe around 6 weeks or so. He sent me for an ultrasound at about 9 weeks, I think, to confirm how far along I was.....I'd been on the 3 month BC pill so we didn't really know how or when I'd concieved.
Missi....loving wife to Jason, mommy to Ricky (1-12-05), and soon to be mommy to Logan Douglas (due Feb 2010). I'm a cloth diapering, baby wearing, breastfeeding till baby wants to quit, homeschooling, non-circumcising, anti-cry it out, part time working, animal loving, trashy romance novel reading, farm raised hillbilly. I have had Meningitis and Swine Flu and lived to tell about it. Any questions?
Thank you for all your replies! Since it's my first we still haven't told family yet (we will after the appointment) so I can't ask my mom any questions yet :)

At my midwife's office (a joint OB & CNM practice), they routinely schedule both the first appointment and the dating ultrasound between 8-10 weeks. The main exception to this is women with a history of early miscarriage or other problems in early pregnancy, then they'll take a look at you earlier. For a "normal" pregnancy there isn't a lot they can do early on, except tell you to take your prenatals. ;-)
Congratulations, BTW.
My 1st appt and ultrasound I was 9 weeks 3 days. However I did have some bloodwork done during the 5th and 6th weeks to check my HCG levels since I had a history of 2 miscarriages. I was also put on progesteone the day I got a clear positive which was at 3 weeks and 6 days.
With DD #1 I went in finally at about 8 weeks. I found out at 6 weeks. Then with this one, I missed a whole month, THEN got pregnant apparently. I went in with my own LMP and EDD and I was 15 weeks according to my schedule. Then with the first u/s found out I was 9 weeks, so apparently I found out I was pregnant at 2 weeks....hmm. How the heck I missed a commplete month and THEN got pregnant a month later after still not getting my period, is BEYOND me! lol!
