I talked to my Dr today during an impromptu visit to the hospital (had contractions- got a shot of terbutaline sulfate and all is better now) and my wonderful doula remembered to ask the Dr if there were forms or anything we needed to sign in order to bring the placenta home- said to just bring a cooler and all is fine :D YAY! I'm excited, and plan on either making smoothies with very small bits of the placenta mixed in or encapsulating it once I have the energy. The benefits I've heard are amazing, and I'm very much looking forward to a quicker healing time and less PPD. If nothing else- can't hurt!

Nope- so long as the placenta is quickly refrigerated and then frozen it keeps just like any other meat- except no worries about what it could have come into contact with on the way to the store. What I will probably do is cut it into little pieces and use some fresh and encapsulate the rest.
Quoting jasminefleur:Um, regarding making smoothies with it (forgive me if I'm way off base), wouldn't it need to be cooked first? I would think it would be...meaty...and would get rancid pretty darn quickly.
